Walmart Announce On Tuesday, a new partnership with OpenAI will allow consumers to shop for Walmart products via its AI-powered chatbot, including things like groceries (not fresh foods), household essentials, and more, then check out instantly.

To use this feature, customers will tap the “Buy” button in the ChatGPT app when shopping, after linking their Walmart accounts to ChatGPT. Products from third-party vendors will also be supported when the feature rolls out later this fall.
Walmart explains that the new agreement with OpenAI will allow the retailer to better learn and predict customer needs, making online shopping more personalized and proactive, rather than just reactive.
The partnership comes on the heels of OpenAI’s recent announcement of its plan to enter the world of e-commerce With agent shopping systemwhich includes product discovery, recommendation and payments. Initially, OpenAI is collaborating with Etsy and Shopify sellers, the company said.
The ChatGPT-focused shopping feature won’t be the only way consumers can shop using AI. Along with other AI investments, Walmart recently made Its innovative AI-powered shopping assistant, Sparky, Designed to help customers discover, compare products and make purchases. The feature will be expanded to include reordering, booking a service, and understanding multimedia inputs from text, images, audio, and video.
The retailer has an existing relationship with OpenAI in other areas of its business too, having adopted OpenAI and ChatGPT Enterprise certifications for its internal teams. Both Walmart and Sam’s Club are using AI extensively to do other things, like speed up fashion production by up to 18 weeks and improve customer service timeframes by up to 40%.
“For many years now, e-commerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses. That’s about to change,” Walmart President and CEO Doug McMillon noted in a prepared statement. He added: “There is a coming native AI experience that is multimedia, personal and contextual. We are moving towards a more fun and convenient future with Sparky and through partnerships, including this important step with OpenAI.”
