Whether you’ve seen it convincing Reddit threadlife hack Tik Tokor an expert guide to The best dehumidifiersThe hype is real. I live in Scotland, where it is dark and wet for several months every year. We also have a word for weather: dreich (which means dreary and dreary). We also have a mixture of poorly ventilated and poorly insulated homes which we heat twice a day. The result is windows soaked in condensation and black mold.

I’ve been using this dehumidifier for the past year, in two completely different homes, and it’s one of my favorites. I will never go back to the wet life. The Meaco dehumidifier is probably the most difficult to operate device in my home. It’s not perfect – I’ll get to the downsides – but first, let me explain why I love it.

Most of the houses I lived in for the first 40 years of my life were damp. Many had single glazing, limited insulation, and solid stone or brick walls without a cavity. Combine that with gas central heating, which warms a house quickly but is used sparingly, usually twice a day, and you get temperatures that rise and fall quickly, making a perfect breeding ground for condensation and mould. Cold and damp homes are a A serious problem in the UK.

For a long time, I thought wet windows and black mold in the corners were normal. I will never forget when we moved out of our last apartment in Edinburgh. When I pulled the double bed with the large headboard away from the wall, it was completely covered in black mold. I had been feeling sick for a while, and when I looked it up, I had it all figured out Symptoms of exposure to black mold. I was completely ignorant about the dangers of moisture.

Our first real home as a couple with young children was of modern construction, with double glazing, proper insulation, efficient central heating, and the warmest house I have ever lived in. But because there were no drafts, condensation appeared on the windows every morning. Cooking and drying your laundry can make things worse, but opening the windows during the winter makes it too cold and expensive to reheat.

I read about the potential benefits of a dehumidifier and decided to try it. Immediately, the condensation disappeared, but the other big benefit was drying the clothes indoors.

I know you’re not supposed to do this, but I grew up putting clothes on radiators to dry. Or we use a clothes airer in the hall. In some apartments I lived in, it took days for jeans to dry, and there was a constant musty smell. But there was no clothes dryer, and there was often no or limited access to outdoor space for hanging clothes.
