What happened in the first season of Paradise?

After an extinction-level event sends the world into chaos, a select group of elites move into a high-tech underground bunker. The community, with its leadership structure, suburban neighborhoods and small businesses, all exist under a false sky that helps reflect life on the surface.

Cal was the forward-facing leader, but the real person pulling the strings was a strong woman named Samantha Redmond. Also known by her nickname “Sinatra”, she is the billionaire who financed the entire project.

As the season progressed, it became clear that she had sinister motives (yet to be revealed) in how she kept the hideout running and the secrets she was keeping close to the vest.

To keep the population under control, lies were told about the state of the world outside the bunker. But as the season progressed, that narrative began to crack under the pressure of Xavier’s persistence in his hunt to find the culprit who killed the president. Although the killer was not Sinatra, all roads led to her.

Who killed President Cal Bradford?

Although Xavier was an excellent Secret Service agent, his relationship with Cal wasn’t all sunshine and roses. Throughout the season, we’ve gotten flashbacks that have affected their contentious relationship — especially the decision the Chief made to escape the disaster without telling Xavier that his wife, Terry, wouldn’t be able to leave in time. Essentially, this positioned the Chief as the person that Xavier blamed for her potential death.

But did she die? More on that shortly.

Xavier’s investigation into the president’s murder goes back to building the bunker. At the time, safety warnings were ignored, and some employees died from arsenopyrite poisoning.

The killer turns out to be a former construction project manager, and his motive for sneaking into Heaven under a false identity was to take revenge on the corporation. The lack of accountability behind all the damage and pain caused by the bunker project fueled his motivations.

Is Xavier’s wife alive?

A multi-faceted nuclear war, which led to a host of natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, a massive tsunami and a massive earthquake, fueled the lies that Sinatra and her crew told to the approximately 2,500 residents of the bunker. But was the reality above a nuclear wasteland?

Xavier gets a glimmer of hope that his wife is still alive when he finds out that President Bradford has decided not to use the country’s nuclear weapons. Instead, he shut down the system, leading to a global technological collapse. This move meant, in Xavier’s eyes, that there were potential survivors on the surface. Terry may be one of them.

How did the first season of Paradise end?

Xavier’s intervention revealed a power struggle within the hideout’s leadership. Jane Driscoll, who worked as a Secret Service agent alongside Xavier, has been revealed as a potential villain who will have a larger role in season two. Sinatra (aka Samantha Redmond) was shot, but she didn’t die. Meanwhile, Bradford’s position as President was filled by Chief Baines, an indecisive, soft-spoken person in whom Sinatra had little confidence.

Young citizens formed a resistance group after Xavier’s work exposed Sinatra’s lies. The season ended with the future of the dugout and its leadership in question.

As for Xavier, he carried out his mission outside the bunker. He obtained coordinates to guide him to the survivors on the surface and set out to find more answers, and his wife as well.
