President Donald Trump’s campaign promise to tighten immigration measures may set The 58 elected sheriffs in trouble of California because of its responsibility for local prison management. CalMatters polled all California sheriffs on how they plan to handle the complexity of local, state and federal immigration laws. That’s what they told us.

CalMatters contacted the holders via email and contact forms on their websites. When they were not available, we called the contact number listed on their website. The sheriff’s offices of two counties (Monterey and San Mateo) did not return calls for comment.
Trump’s allies have signaled for months that they would focus the initial enforcement of immigration laws of undocumented persons who have committed crimes. This month, the House of Representatives passed a bill that would allow immigration agencies to deport people arrested on suspicion of robbery, theft and shoplifting . The bill is expected to pass the Senate.
