Future food delivery service may arrive in the trunk of a self-driving car.
Thursday, WaymoAlphabet, the self-driving arm of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, announced it is teaming up with DoorDash to send meal and grocery orders. The partnership will begin in Phoenix “in the coming months,” according to one of the companies Blog post. The service will be available via 315 square miles Waymo vehicles already drive in the area.
Waymo’s self-driving process takes place on an all-electric vehicle Jaguar I-Pace. Flights are available to the general public in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Austin, Texas, with several expansions on the way.
Depending on the city, vehicles can be called via Waymo application Or Uber. Waymo is also launching a Partnering with Lyft in Nashville In the coming months.

“Waymo Driver has already logged more than 100 million self-driving miles on public roads and served more than 10 million trips,” the blog post noted. “By providing a reliable and efficient delivery option, Waymo offers another way for people to incorporate the benefits of this technology into their daily routine.”
DoorDash is also exploring new ways to deliver orders autonomously. Last month, it made its debut Delivery robot named Dotwhich can drive at speeds of up to 20 mph and navigate roads, bike lanes and sidewalks. The service is also launching in the Phoenix metro area, with plans to expand to other cities.
To allow DoorDash deliveries via Waymo, you will need to opt in for self-driving vehicle deliveries when you check out on DoorDash. From there, you may be matched with a Waymo vehicle.
When your Waymo car arrives, you can open the trunk through the DoorDash app and take your items.
This delivery method means that you will have to compromise on the convenience of having someone deliver your order directly to your doorstep, which can be a drawback, especially for people with limited mobility.
To start, Waymo will deliver orders from DashMart, the grocery stores owned and operated by DoorDash. The companies plan to expand into more local retailers over time.
