For many years, accessory manufacturer Twelve South has sold smart accessories for charging devices. And his new device Serverperhaps the simplest idea ever: It’s a nice-looking tray designed to be where you put your keys, sunglasses, and other pocket detritus, and it offers two ways to charge whatever needs to be charged. It costs $179.99 and will ship within the next two weeks.
Most Valet trays are just… a tray. It is covered in soft leather, and comes in several different colors. (You can also customize the outer metal frame to match.) On one side, a raised square serves as a dock for up to 15W wireless charging. You can plug another USB cable into a port on the side, and charge another device that way – again at 15W. The Valet itself is connected via a 36W power supply, and comes with a 1.5m cable to do so.
The charging specifications make Valet’s purpose quite clear: this is not meant to be your laptop charger, or a charging hub of any kind. It’s not even directly functional like Twelve South’s HiRiseWhich can charge three devices simultaneously. What it is, instead, is an attempt to make charging your most important devices — especially your phone — seem more seamless.
It’s the eternal dream of wireless charging, in fact, just leaving your device aside wherever It will be complete when received. The bias on the platform is not exactly whereverbut I’ve been using the Valet service and actually enjoyed not having to search for cables as much. I’m sitting at my desk, but most servers will likely end up on night tables and in doorways.
Twelve South is one of many companies, including big names like Ikea, that are exploring gadgets that feel more like home decor than high tech. This year’s CES is full of gadgets that try to hide their core utility, and while Valet may not be the most exciting example of the idea, it’s pretty useful.
