As we move into day three of TikTokalypse, it looks like the app has finally settled down in the US, as we’ve verified that it’s possible to consistently post new videos and even get others to watch them. This was no simple task since the service Started having problems early Sunday morningBut on Tuesday morning, I was able to post a new short video and watch a clip my colleague in the UK posted.
A statement TikTok USDS, the brand’s new US owner and operator, said it had “made significant progress in restoring our US infrastructure” with its as-yet-unnamed US data center partner. She also noted that users in the United States may still encounter some errors, especially when it comes to posting new content. Although I’m able to watch videos from outside the US, my newly created UK account, as well as a number of other profiles, failed to load.
TikTok USDS said the issue started due to a power outage at the data center, followed by “Successive systems failureMeanwhile, theories and rumors have spread about TikTok’s new terms of service, the goals of its new owners, how the algorithm could be manipulated in the US, and the possibility of censorship on topics such as ICE Actions in Minneapolis and Jeffrey Epstein. A number of people said they would leave the service and delete their accounts, while some suggested using different apps such as Scrolled up.
It’s impossible to know how any of this has changed behind the scenes or might change in the future without a much broader analysis, but it looks like the service is back up and running, corny videos and all.
We have made significant progress in restoring our US infrastructure with our US data center partner. However, user experience in the US may still experience some technical issues, including when publishing new content. We are committed to returning TikTok to full capacity as soon as possible. We will continue to provide updates. Thank you for your patience.
