How does direct route routing work?
This feature uses the Google feature on the device artificial intelligence To understand exactly which lane the car is sitting in by reading lane markings, road markings and other visual cues through the front camera. This is combined with Navigation in Google Maps Data to produce clear visual reminders and audio alerts when it’s time to move.
Picture a four-lane highway where your navigation system says there’s an exit in a half-mile. Instead of glancing at the center screen or your smartphone in a holder and second guessing at a last-minute intersection, route planning appears where your eyes actually sit.
Instead of looking for arrows on your smartphone and your car’s center display to indicate the lane position you need while navigating, the visualization in front of your eyes will show you where to go.
Each lane is highlighted for the chosen route, and the system recalls the lane the car is currently in. If you’re in the wrong lane, for example, the HUD instantly shows you and gives you a vocal nudge to move, giving you enough time to react. Instead of selecting the exit at the last second, you get a clear view that you’re two lanes away from where you need to be, and you can make the change long before the intersection appears.
It turns a potential last-minute scramble into a calm, early correction. Although such mistakes may not be common in areas you know well, they are very easy to make in unfamiliar environments. The new Direct Steering system will begin arriving via an over-the-air software update to Polestar 4 owners in the US and Sweden in the coming months. More markets and types of routes will follow.
