Cal State San Bernardino is one of more than 50 universities investigating the US Department of Education, even as President Donald Trump resentment The department.
A statement from the Civil Rights Division Service lists three campaigns in California – Cal State San Bernardino, Cal Poly Humboldt and UC Berkeley – among the universities, which is said to have violated Title VI of the Education Code. This is the section of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits organizations that receive federal means from discriminating on the basis of race, color or national origin.
Investigations aim to “ensure that universities do not discriminate against their students based on racial and racial stereotypes,” said US Secretary of Education Secretary Linda McMahon.
The State University of Cal reviews the claim and will cooperate with the investigation, said Amy Bentley-Smith, a Cal State spokesman.
“CSU continues to meet the long -standing CSU federal and state laws and policies and does not discriminate against or provide preferences based on race, gender, color, ethnicity or national origin,” she said.
An employee of UC Berkeley said the campus also responds to the federal investigation.
“UC Berkeley has an unwavering commitment to have a campus without discrimination,” said Vica -Center Dan Maguloff in a statement.
Thehe Ministry of Education Tran from the California University violates the laws on civil rights by partnering with a doctoral project, which he describes as a “organization that provides for the doctoral students to students in an idea of obtaining a doctoral degree and opportunities for network work, but limits the admissibility based on the compensation of the participants.”
The doctoral project describes its mission as a developing faculty of a business school and said it was open to all candidates this year.
“Our vision is to create a width pipeline for talents from current and future business leaders who are engaged in excellence and with each other, through networking, mentoring and unique events,” the statement said. “This year we have opened our application for membership to anyone who shares this vision.”
Ahlam Muhtaseb, a professor of media research at Cal State San Bernardino, said the federal complaint made no sense because the university did not offer a doctoral degree in business. He offers a PhD in educational leadership and Muhthaseb believes that this is the directed Ministry of Education.
“This is not serious because they say that we violate the rights of white students because we have recognized 90% students in color,” in the educational leadership program, she said. “This is a ridiculous statement because we are SourceS “
About 70% of students at Cal State San Bernardino are Latin American, 10% are white, 6% are Asian, and 5% are black.
“So it’s natural that this is the community we serve,” Muhtaseb said.
The investigation, she said, “has a chilling effect. I see it as Attack against our marginalized communities.“
It is unclear how the Ministry of Education will conduct the investigation as the Trump administration is trying to remove the department.
On March 11, the department announced that it was reducing its own staff by half. On March 14, she announced that she would investigate universities for alleged civil rights violations. Last Friday, Trump issued an executive order to dismantle the department.
The Ministry of Education did not respond to an email from Calmatters, and the telephone line for its press information office had an automated message saying it was temporarily closed.
On Monday, a coalition of advocacy groups and state leaders, including California General Prosecutor Rob Bont, brought a case to block the removal of the department and the mass dismissal of its employees, claiming to violate the administration of student loans, disabilities and other functions.
They pointed out that the Congress had created the department and had the sole organ to close it.
The campus faculty aimed at the investigation said it had already lost its original goal.
“The Ministry of Education is more or less dismantled in terms of its civil rights and the assistance of students, but it is now turned against the institutions it was designed to support,” says Ryder Dgida, a professor of history at Cal Poly Humboldt.
