Sonos is no stranger to the occasional sale. The popular audio company routinely runs sales around Black Friday, Amazon Prime Day, and the Super Bowl, though it’s rare to see deep discounts on its portable speakers outside of shopping events. the Original Sonos ROM Not a bad speaker by any means, but quality of life updates are on Walkthrough 2 Makes real sense, especially if you’re the type who constantly struggles to pair the first-gen model with anything via Bluetooth (guilty as charged). The latest version of the Roam has a dedicated pairing button on the back — which means you don’t have to hold down the power button for a set amount of time just to sync it with a new phone — while still allowing you to take advantage of the larger ecosystem of Sonos products over your home’s Wi-Fi network.
Sound quality remains unchanged, although that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The first-generation Roam was one of the best-sounding speakers in its class, with clear, enjoyable audio performance and enough depth to satisfy most people, especially when Sonos’ automatic Trueplay room optimizer did its job. It’s a bit of a shame that the USB-C port remains for power only, and that battery life is limited to 10 hours, but I’d venture that most people will simply use it in the garden or simply for an afternoon at the pool. After all, it’s IP67 waterproof, which means it can withstand up to 30 minutes in 3 feet of water.
Perhaps best of all, Sons claims to have made some tweaks and improvements under the hood to ensure continued battery performance over the long term, which was what the original model was all about. I haven’t had the Roam 2 long enough to say that for sure, but so far, so good.
