Cal State San Bernardino is one of more than 50 universities investigating the United States Ministry of Education, even while President Donald Trump Try to dismantle The department.
A statement from the Civil Rights Office of the department includes three California campus – which San Bernardino, Kal Polly Humboldt and UC Berkeley – among the universities that, according to the organization, violate Title VI of the Education Code. This section of the Law on Civil Rights of 1964 prohibits organizations that receive federal means discriminating against reasons of race, color or national origin.
The study aims to “ensure that universities do not discriminate against their students based on racing and racial stereotypes,” said the Minister of Education of the United States Linda McMahon.
The California State University System reviews a claim and will cooperate with the investigation, said Amy Bentley-Smith, a Cal State spokesman.
“CSU continues to comply with federal and state laws for long data and CSU policies and does not discriminate or offer preferences for reasons of race, gender, color, ethnicity or national origin,” he said.
An employee of UC Berkeley said the campus also responded to federal studies.
“UC Berkeley has an unwavering commitment to have discrimination -free campus,” said Vice -Center Dan Motuloff in a statement.
He Ministry of Education He confirms that the three universities of California have violated the laws on civil rights by contacting a doctoral project, which he describes as a “organization that aims to provide information on doctoral students on how to obtain a doctoral degree and opportunities for contacts, but limits the admissibility based on the breed of the participants.”
The doctoral project describes its mission as the development of teachers in business schools and said it was open to all candidates this year.
“Our vision is to create a wider career of talents of current and future business leaders, engaged in high achievements and with each other, through a network, mentoring and unique events,” he said. “This year we have opened the request for membership to anyone who shares this vision.”
Ahlam Muhtaseb, a professor of media research at Cal State San Bernardino, said the federal complaint has no foundation, since it does not offer a doctoral degree in business at the university. Yes, he offers a doctorate in educational leadership and Muhthaseb that this is the purpose of the Ministry of Education.
“This is not serious because they say that we violate the rights of white students who have recognized 90% of students in color in the educational leadership program,” he said. “This is a ridiculous accusation because we are an institution that serves Hispanos“.
Approximately 70% of Cal State San Bernardino students are Latin, 10% are white, 6% are Asians, and 5% are black.
“Of course, this is the community we serve,” Muhtaseb said.
The investigation, he said, “has a chilling effect. I consider it a Attack against our marginalized communities“.
However, it is unclear how the investigation will be carried out by the Ministry of Education, as the Trump administration is trying to remove the department.
On March 11, the department announced that it would cut its staff by half. On March 14, he announced that he would investigate universities for alleged civil rights violations. Last Friday, Trump issued an executive order to dismantle the department.
The education department did not respond to an email from Calmatters, and the telephone line of its press information office had an automatic message indicating that it was temporarily closed.
On Monday, a coalition of defense groups and state leaders, including California General Prosecutor General Rob Bont, brought a case to block the removal of the department and the mass rejection of their employees, arguing that it would harm the administration of student loans, services for disabled and other functions.
They pointed out that the Congress had created the department and had the exclusive body to close it.
Professors of the research object of the study said their original goal had already been lost.
“The Ministry of Education is more or less dismantled in terms of her civil rights and the assistance of students, but now she has turned against the institutions intended to support,” says Ryder Dgida, a professor of history at Cal Poly Humboldt.
