iPhone is The least repairable phone on the market, according to repairability experts. Phones from Samsung and Google are not far behind.
The most recent repairability ratings are from an annual report called “Repair failed“It was introduced today by the consumer advocacy group US Berg. The groups say this is the first report since 2021 French law The requirement to rank products with degrees of repairability can be widely adopted to show how companies are – or are not – making products more repairable. The answer is that repairability advances more quickly in some places than in others.
The results were good for the phones it made MotorolaWhich got a grade of B+. Google phones I got a C-. The ruling was even worse Samsung phonesWhich got a D. It was last on the list apple With D-. Apple and Samsung did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The results were better for laptops than for smartphones, with Asus earning a top rating of B+ and Apple at the bottom with its MacBooks at C-.
The report’s authors hope that publishing these low scores will encourage manufacturers to do better.
“Putting these right incentives in place can push these companies to come up with innovations that are actually useful,” says Nathan Proctor, senior director of the U.S. Berg Campaign for the Right to Repair. “Instead of coming up with new ways to jam AI down our throats, you can make things that last and we can fix them.”
Despite a lot The right to repair Concessions offered by companies – such as making their tools, parts and repair instructions available to the public – These ratings are lower than in past years, largely due to new information gleaned from European laws that require repair results to be printed on product packaging.
French law classifies products based on how easily they can be dismantled, whether documentation and tools are available, and the availability and price of spare parts. In 2023, the European Union was established law construction European Product Register for Energy Labelinga process that rates devices according to key repairability factors such as whether the products have easy access and disassembly, battery durability, ingress protection such as waterproofing, and durability to handle repeated drops. The rating goes from A to F.
To arrive at its own rankings, US Pirg compares EPREL’s and France’s reform indices with other US-specific factors, such as whether companies actively lobby against the right to repair or are members of trade associations that do.
“If you’re buying your equipment from a company that’s spending their money lobbying against your right to fix that thing, that doesn’t reflect their support, your ability to fix that,” Proctor says. “So we’re also establishing points for some of those legislative activities.”
Apple phones are getting better results than in years past, like when iPhones were set F rating In 2022. (iPhones received a C- in 2025.) Apple’s low rating is due to software support, and how EU laws track information about what companies make available in their products. Based on EU laws, companies must self-report how their devices meet repair requirements. These ratings tend to score very low.
“When we were rating on a curve, Apple wasn’t at the top of the bad column,” Proctor says. “But why do we grade on a curve? We should only have products that last longer.”
The ultimate goal of these rankings, Proctor says, is to draw attention to the importance of repairability, accessibility, and waste reduction.
“This is an emerging issue of vital importance and we need better leadership from businesses and other public policy officials,” says Proctor. “We shouldn’t be getting rid of all our internet-connected stuff every couple of years because it’s impossible to use with the software. It’s not sustainable at all. It’s crazy. Let’s not build this world. This world is a dystopian world.”
“I’m pretty confident some of these things will be addressed,” Proctor adds. “Apple engineers are good at making things. They’re good at solving problems.”
