The European Union’s top executive body has confirmed a cyber attack after hackers reportedly stole large amounts of data from its cloud storage.
European Commission spokeswoman Nika Blazevic confirmed to TechCrunch on Friday that the commission “detected a cyberattack that affected part of our cloud infrastructure.”
The spokesperson said: “We took immediate steps and contained the attack. Risk mitigation measures were also implemented. The investigation is ongoing but we can already confirm that the Commission’s internal systems were not affected by the cyber attack.”

The news was first reported by Bleeping Computer of the violation on Friday, citing sources familiar with the incident. The post said hackers stole hundreds of gigabytes of data, including multiple databases, from the European Commission’s account on cloud giant Amazon Web Services. The hacker provided publishing proof of his access, including screenshots.
It is not immediately clear what types of data were stolen.
