A German court has ruled that OpenAI’s ChatGPT software violated the country’s copyright laws by training its language models on licensed musical works without permission, multiple media outlets reported, including The Guardian reported.
The decision came as a result of a lawsuit filed last November by GEMA, the association that deals with music rights in Germany, against OpenAI. The company was ordered to pay an undisclosed amount in damages to GEMA, but said it disagreed with the ruling and was “considering next steps.” Meanwhile, GEMA considered this “the first landmark AI ruling in Europe.”
“Today, we set a precedent that protects and clarifies the rights of authors: even operators of AI tools like ChatGPT must adhere to copyright law,” said Tobias Holzmüller, CEO of GEMA, The Guardian reported. “Today, we successfully defend the livelihoods of music creators.”
