Photoshop It’s practically bursting at the seams with the new Generative artificial intelligence Tools these days. As someone who spends a lot of time testing AI image generatorsI know first-hand that the phrase “AI-powered” can mean anything from really useful to laughably bad. So, naturally, I had to see if Adobe’s cool new features were actually worth all the hype.
Let’s be clear: bringing AI into everything isn’t always the answer, especially for professionals who know Photoshop well. Some of these tools can actually speed up your workflow, but you need to know which ones are legitimate and which are just flashy gimmicks.
Before you start, Adobe will make you swear that you won’t use their AI to do anything illegal or terrible (their lawyers make them say that). Once you agree to Artificial Intelligence Terms of ServiceOnly then will you discover whether AI tools are really worth trying, along with some hard-earned tips from trying them out. You can find these features in Photoshop on desktop, the web, and now even on your phone.
Adobe Firefly’s AI-powered image template is available as a separate application built into Photoshop, so you can use it wherever it’s easiest for you. If you’re already creating with Photoshop, here’s how to access Firefly.
When you write your claim, don’t be afraid to add a lot of detail, putting the most important items first. Check out our AI image Fast typing guide For more tips for better results. If you’re not a fan of the images, you can click the image pop-up window or the icon with four squares to set reference and vector images. You can tap the three vertical dots at the end of the pin bar to make comments about generations, remove background, or create similar images. If you still don’t like what you have, I recommend starting over with a new router rather than trying to tweak and generate endlessly, hoping to get it right.
You can also use creative AI tools to edit your existing project in Photoshop. Generative fill, expand, and demodulation operations are some of the most popular AI tools. Here’s how to use each.
Generative mobilization It’s like a mini AI image generator. It is one of the most popular AI tools in Photoshop. Using Generative Fill, you can select a specific area of your project, enter a text prompt, and a new design will be created for that area. You can find Generative Fill by going to Edit > Generative Fill. Make sure to use the Selection Brush tool. Select the area where you want the items to appear, type your prompt and click Create.
Generative expansion It is useful when you need more space in the image. You can create new sections of your photo to blend seamlessly with your existing photo or you can enter a text prompt and create a new scene. You can also use it to zoom in on your project. To access Generative Expansion, select the Crop tool, drag your canvas to any size you want, enter a prompt if you want, and then click Create.
I edited my original image (left) to include more sky and sand with Generative Fill and then added the AI seagulls with Generative Fill.
Generative removal It’s like a super AI eraser. The tool isolates and removes specific elements from your project without disrupting the entire image. There are two ways to remove objects from your work. The first is to select the object using the Object Selection tool, then click Generative Fill and place the word “Remove” at the prompt. Otherwise, you can use the Removal tool (Spot Healing Tool > Removal Tool) to manually mark the objects you want to erase.

Replace the sky It is a great AI tool that can add drama to your landscape. You can create a replacement sky by going to Edit > Replace Sky and choosing from a variety of options, including sunset, blue sky, and colorful options marked “Amazing.” Once you choose the preset you like, you can manually adjust the brightness and other elements.
In this case, I used AI sky replacement technology to add some Carolina blue skies (right) to my original shot of Kenan Stadium (left).
Create background It works well for product photography or other shots where the subject or object is the focal point of the photo. Upload your shot into Photoshop, click Remove Background from the contextual taskbar (the pin box that pops up when you select the layer) and click Create Background. Some wallpapers look better than others. The city spaces I created looked kind of fake, but the colorful or patterned backgrounds were great.
There are some other AI tools that may be right for you depending on your project. Neural filters It can be used to edit images in more detail, and Curved pen It can help designers create more consistent arcs. We also expect to see more AI-powered editing tools introduced in Photoshop this year.
Overall, Photoshop’s AI suite performed well. Some tools are helpful, but you need to know what tools they are designed to use in order to get the best results. For example, generative enlargement was useful for resizing images, and I found generative removal to be great for clearing out objects that spoil images. Other tools, such as the sky replacement tool, worked for some images but not others. I wouldn’t use Photoshop’s AI in every project, but I think there may be times when this is a good option.
