State courts not safe from icy arrests

Immigration arrests in the federal courts have attracted the bigger part of national attention since Donald Trump became president, but in California, customs and immigration agents appear in state courts and arrest immigrants, Calmatters Nigel Duara reports.

This happened this summer in Freen: a judge, according to the messages, congratulated a man on the completion of a one -year program ordered by the court after a sentence of domestic violence last year. Ice agents were waiting outside the Court of Justice and arrested him. He has since been deported to Mexico, his sister told Duara.

The history of man is not unique. Ice agents have arrested at least two dozen other people in state courts through Stanislav., Glen., Los Angeles and Freshni counties.

This summer in the Booth County, the immigration agents have undergone an operation in the Oovil County County. This is a violation of a 2019 California Law This prohibits civilian arrests “in the Court of Justice while attending court proceedings or conducting legal business in the Court of Justice.”

The Administrator of the BUT County Court is disturbed by the courtroom arrests, as they discourage people who are afraid of being deported to attend routine court proceedings.

  • Sharif ElmalaIn a statement by the Supreme Court of the BUT in the BUT County: “The court is concerned with the potential freezing effect and other potential adverse effects on participation in the legal system that may occur due to these actions of implementation in and around the courts.”

Those who miss the mandatory appearance of a criminal court may face additional charges.

But much as account Governor Gavin Newsom has signed Saturday, designed to protect agents to apply immigration outside schools and hospitals, it is unclear what the law enforcement agencies in California can do to impose the law that keeps agents from the courts.

An Ice spokesman says agents have a full right to arrest “a law officer where you find them.”

Colleges and universities in California are about to feel the consequences of the steep federal abbreviations of diversity programs, Calmatters Adam Echelman reports.

The abbreviations came after the US Department of Education said earlier this month that it was terminating a grant program that supports “minority service institutions”, claiming that it illegally favored certain racial or ethnic groups.

This will mean that schools in California will lose access to higher education funding, academic consultations and other maintenance services aimed at helping black, Latin American, Asian and Indians.

  • David Lee, Who will soon lose his job as the director of the Asian Center for the success of students in the Asian Pacific in Oakland in Lanny College: “It’s like a bowel blow.”

At least one lawyer learned the hard way that the judges are not too fond of lawyers using Chatgpt and other generative artificial intelligence models to write documents they submit in court, Kali Johnson reports on Calfatters.

California lawyer Amir Mostafavi has to pay a $ 10,000 fine to file a state court complaint full of fake quotes generated by Chatgpt.

  • Mostafavi: “I hope this example helps others not fall into the hole. I pay the price.”

In the meantime Guidelines requiring judges and court officials To ban generative AI or to adopt a generative policy for using AI by December 15. At the same time, the California Bar Association is considering whether to strengthen its AI Code of Conduct.
