At least three councils in London are responding to an ongoing cyberattack, prompting officials to shut down their networks and phone lines and activate emergency plans.
Local government authorities covering London boroughs Kensington and Chelsea and Westminsterwhich shares IT systems as part of a joint arrangement, said its focus was “on protecting systems and data, restoring systems, and maintaining critical services to the public.”
Hammersmith and Fulham Council is also affected by the cyber attack, According to its website.
The councils, which provide public services such as housing, social services and rubbish collection, did not describe the nature of the cyber attack or place blame on a specific hacking group. They indicated that the investigation into whether the data was stolen is still ongoing.
The Kensington website said the cause of the cyberattack “has now been determined” but the council “will not provide further details about the incident at this stage” due to the ongoing investigation with UK law enforcement agencies.
