On Tuesday, Spotify expanded its requested playlists feature To include podcastsan update that may make it easier for Premium users to find new shows to listen to. The playlists were originally requested It was launched as an experimental feature In December, but previously he only worked in the music business. You can use the feature to effectively create personalized Discover Weekly playlists using text prompts to “point the algorithm” toward specific genres or themes.
Tuesday’s update lets you do the same thing with playlists of podcast episodes. However, the feature is still in beta, and is currently only available in English for Premium users in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden.
When I tried the updated feature, Spotify’s AI took several minutes to create my podcast playlist (including a step it described as “humor checking”), but I was surprisingly satisfied with the results. You requested a playlist Dungeons and Dragons Actual theatrical shows, including a mix of popular series and hidden gems. My first prompt highlighted a noteworthy issue if you use this feature for podcasts — it will pull random episodes from shows, which can be a problem if the show is designed for chronological listening.
This was very easy to fix. After you create a playlist, you can go back and edit the prompt to update the playlist. I’ve added a line specifying that the playlist should only include the first episodes of campaigns or shows. The new samples the AI provided me with were more comprehensive than I expected, including two episodes from the series Dimension 20 and Critical role Plus some smaller shows that I’ve never heard of before or haven’t had a chance to listen to yet, e.g Tales of the Stinking Dragon and Join the party.
Each episode in the playlist also included a brief, AI-generated description of how the episode fit my prompt. Although I’m usually skeptical of AI-generated summaries like these, the summaries of the shows I watched were accurate, like the description Dimension 20: High Fantasy As “funny with real dangers”. It’s vague, but at least it’s not misleading.
You can add to your desired playlists and edit them manually after you create them, or keep updating them if you’re not a fan of the podcast episodes the AI pulls for you. While I still don’t plan to use this feature for music, it could be useful for some listeners when it comes to podcasts, specifically putting together an “Episodes 1” sample pack like this one. You can also set the playlist to be updated regularly so you can get new podcast samples daily or weekly.
To try this feature, go to the Spotify app, select Create, then choose Playlist Prompt from the menu. In the quick text box, describe the type of podcast episodes you want the playlist to include and tap Create Playlist. The first two times I tried this, I got an error message saying that the requested playlists didn’t support podcasts yet. The issue was resolved after I updated the app.
