There are high expectations for what could be the first ever OpenAI hardware product. Adding to the hype is the fact that Ive was the lead designer of such transformative products at Apple as the iPhone, MacBook, and Apple Watch. OpenAI’s most popular AI software, ChatGPTIt has about 800 million weekly active users worldwide. A hardware project will likely include the kinds of things that ChatGPT does.
Altman and Ive said the devices they are working on were the result of extensive exploration and numerous discussions about the implications of a practically all-knowing computing device that users could carry with them. Altman described work on the current prototype as “amazingly good.”
Previous reports have indicated that the device Ive and Altman are working on will be the size of a smartphone, but without a screen. The Demo Day 25 event seems to indicate that it will be simple and fun to play, and will have more personality than most.
Peaceful, simple and fun
The AI project is said to have a more peaceful feel than some modern devices, though it’s not entirely clear what that means. Altman said that most of the devices and applications he uses today are noisy and annoying, but the next device will have a quieter atmosphere.
He said the product will be easy to use and people will want to touch it.
“I hope when people see it they’ll just say, ‘That’s it,'” Altman said, to which I added, “They will do it.”
Altman continued to use words including “simple,” “beautiful,” and “fun” to describe the product.
