Wordle guys, you know Today’s answer was duplicate? And a famous one as well.
Spoiler: The answer is CIGAR, which was also the answer to the first ever puzzle on June 19, 2021, when game creator Josh Wardle first released the entertaining puzzle. The answer was also when The New York Times first hosted the puzzle On February 10, 2022.
Talk about Groundhog Day!
Wordle gives you six chances to guess a five-letter word. As you guess different words, it tells you whether those letters appear in the final answer or not at all, and whether they fall in the same place or need to be rearranged. The Times announced the change in its NYT Gameplay newsletter, sent out on January 28, stating that Wordle would begin reusing previous answers. It’s not a complete surprise. Wordle editor Tracy Bennett once said on TikTok that the game would eventually need to expand beyond the original 2,000-word list of answers.
Recycling the answers seems like a smart choice, although other possible options include adding plural words or past tense, which are not currently used as Wordle answers. The puzzle could always expand to six-letter words, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen anytime soon.
Fittingly, the mystery begins by reusing words on Groundhog Day — the famous holiday featured in the 1993 Bill Murray comedy, in which Murray’s character becomes trapped in a time loop and relives February 2 over and over again.
It’s also fitting that the game’s editors chose the first Wordle to use again. As noted above, CIGAR was Wardle’s first answer when only his family and friends learned of the puzzle. It was also the first official word after The Times began running the game in 2022.
One player successfully got the answer on February 2, scoring one word. They commented: “I thought it would be fun to use Wordle Zero as the opening solution. To my surprise, this was the first solution reused. Congratulations to the editors for this nice amount of symmetry.”
Bennett replied: “What a lucky (highly intuitive) guess!” Wordle’s editor went on to say: “It’s very rare that we give this kind of wink to the importance of a day, but this feels like a fun and inspiring way to introduce this twist to the game.”
However, from now on, Wordle’s answers will not be limited to repeated words used in previous puzzles.
“I plan to continue debuting words in 2026, as there are still many beautiful new words to be introduced,” Bennett wrote. “With the exception of today’s wink on Groundhog Day, I don’t plan to associate future solutions with holidays and special occasions. Although there’s no hard and fast rule, I’ll likely prefer words that haven’t been published recently.”
