Nvidia isn’t content to simply dominate the GPU market. We could see Dell and Lenovo laptops equipped with this new silicon in just a few months.
Nvidia and MediaTek are partners in the Arm chip
Nvidia is partnering with MediaTek to build this new chip. Like system-on-chips (SoC) from Qualcomm and Apple, it will be based on the Arm architecture rather than the x86 architecture used by Intel and AMD. Unlike gaming and innovator laptops with dedicated Nvidia GeForce RTX GPUs, laptops with the new SoC designed by Nvidia and manufactured by MediaTek are expected to be thin, lightweight and long lasting. The new chips will reportedly be named N1 and N1X.

Given Nvidia’s deep relationships with game developers with its RTX GPUs, it would certainly make sense for its Arm-based chip to be able to accelerate Arm compatibility.

Nvidia and Intel team up for x86 chip

This is another path to a day when gaming laptops with iGPUs are able to power 3D gaming. Without the thermal and power requirements of a dedicated graphics processor, the design can be much thinner, lighter and more efficient to extend battery life.
New intel Tiger Lake Mobile processors show promise of delivering power as well as efficiency. The first Panther Lake laptop I reviewed is MSI Prestige 14 Flip AIit ran for over 25 hours on a single charge while delivering respectable 3D frame rates. The timing is less clear on when we might see Intel and Nvidia’s chip, but I’m actually curious to see how it compares to Intel’s Panther Lake processors.
For decades, Windows laptop shoppers have had two choices: Intel or AMD. Two years ago, Qualcomm introduced a third option based on Arm Snapdragon X series chips. Now Nvidia will add a fourth option, with Arm and x86-based chips on the horizon. Dell and Lenovo did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
