Governor Gavin Newsom is launching a new special home -reacted group on Friday, marking the latest escalation in his continuing campaign to eliminate the camps.
The Newsom Office expects to deploy the team within the next month in camps in the 10th largest cities in California: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, San Diego, Sacramento, San Jose, Long Beach, Bakersfield and Fresen. He will deal with state -owned camps, such as highway medians or and out of ramps and underwear.
The news is coming as Newsom has been pushing for more application in recent months against all camps that embody the city streets and sidewalks, DOT public parks and winds on the waterways throughout the country. In May he called the cities To make illegally camp in one place for more than three nights in a row. Last year he ordered State agencies to increase the clearing of camps.
“California has created a strong, comprehensive strategy for combating national crises of homelessness and housing – and is superior to the nation as a result of turning this question,” Newsom says in a statement. “No one should live in a dangerous or non -sanitary camp, and we will continue our permanent work to ensure that everyone has a safe place to call home.”
Entitled State Action for facilitating the special camp group, the new Newsom team will include representatives of six different state agencies and departments, each with a different role in playing in the elimination of the camp:
It is soon to say exactly how this new directive will change the reaction of the state of the camps for homeless, said Alex Visotsky, a senior associate of Kylifornia policy for The National Union to terminate homelessnessS The language in the news message sent from the Newsom cabinet had several specific details about how the working group would function. The Newsom Office did not respond to an interview request.
But the only proven way to solve a camp is to move people to a home and connect them to the other services they need, Visotzky said.
“I hope the working group will make sure that we understand the needs of the residents of these camps,” he said, “And what barriers they face to return to the housing if we are going to see results.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass applauds the new working group on Friday.
“The camps for homeless, debris and graffiti, located on highways and highways, are under state jurisdiction,” she said in a statement. “I am glad that the governor is continuing actions to collaborate with local efforts. Los Angeles has decayed throughout the country the trends of increasing homelessness and announcement of the Newsom Governor for a working group today will help to preserve this impulse.”
A 2024 US Supreme Court Decision I gave cities and cities more freedom to be or arrest people for camping in public, even if there were no shelter beds. Since then, Tickets and arrests related to homelessness have risen in some cities in California.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump’s administration is falling into the federal camps. Trump signed an enforcement order This summer, it pushes cities and countries to use law enforcement to get people out of the streets.
Some experts and defenders in the homelessness sector have indicated the similarities between Trump and Newsom’s approaches to clearing the bearings.
But on Friday, the Newsom administration tried to distance its policies from that of the President, saying in a news message:
“Unlike the gambling strategies used by the Trump administration, the safe working group of California brings together each of the tools created by the governor Newsom to clear the bearings and connect people with the necessary care.”
