News Tower proves that good journalism is not a game

Have you ever looked at The Washington Post I thought: “Why is a billionaire allowed to use his enormous wealth?” impact and punishment Editorial decisions in one of the country’s leading newspapers? and/or “I wonder if I can do this?” Good, Tao Newsp It can help you answer at least one of these questions.

News Toweravailable now on Steam, is a management simulation game covering the business of running a newspaper in the 1930s. Players inherit a struggling newspaper with the goal of turning it into New York’s premier news destination, but they’ll have to manage everything from keeping the lights on, keeping their reporters happy, and keeping rival newspapers, mobsters, lawsuits, fake news, and old news at bay.

In addition to providing all printable news, your main job is News Tower It is to make your employees efficient and happy. Smells, loud noises, heat, and lack of a sense of purpose all reduce their happiness, leading to sloppy, slow work. You can alleviate these inconveniences by building office walls, installing fans, and generally making your tower a good place to work. At first, I was confused because some of my employees were unhappy even though they all had their own offices. It was only when I started adding little amenities like plants, clocks, and decorative wallpaper—items not strictly related to increasing their skills or getting rid of harassment—that they improved. Hmm, I wonder if there’s a metaphor somewhere?

I love this little game not only because it’s rare that I have a game that caters to my specific profession. Management simulations can get boring, especially if the majority of gameplay is done by reading text and menus (*cough* Crusader Kings *cough*). but News Tower He sounds more like a god playing with dolls than spreadsheets. Employees wander across the screen, filing reports and repairing broken fixtures using enchanted waste South ParkTerrance and Philip dolls. The News Tower responds to you as you build it, with light bulbs shaking and dust clouds swirling every time you move the walls. When it’s time to print, you have to make a big switch that makes printing fun and tangible I’m not sure Noise. Even the soundtrack adds to the immersion Famous big band drum licks Play as your paper flies through the printing presses just like in motion pictures.

Playing News Tower The journalist also surprised me in ways I should have expected but was not prepared for. I went into this with the goal of making it as real in life as the systems would allow, believing that my skills would translate easily and quickly to success. But even now, my newspaper has gone bankrupt, The staron three separate occasions.

Breaking sales records while breaking the company’s bank account.

Each week, your news provider brings you stories you can customize for your reporters. You choose which stories to pursue based on multiple factors, including what readers in a particular area want, synergy with other stories you’re working on, and your reporters’ strengths.

There are also powerful factions like the mob, the mayor, and others who can influence your decisions depending on whether you court them or not. It’s easy to say, as I said, “I’m an ethical journalist, and I won’t let anyone dictate what I can write about!” But that calculation quickly changes when the mob offers me money to leave any crime stories in the cutting room or when it pleases the mayor and gets me favorable deals on the loans I need to maintain my reporters’ salaries. Although I never received money, I would cooperate with the various factions as long as their requests remained within what I considered morally acceptable. After all, this is how you play the game for real. But just like in real life too, money turned out to be my biggest challenge.

You can play nice with the mob for money or risk breaking your reporters’ knees.

Over time, the skills of all your employees grow, requiring higher salaries. I could have replaced the senior reporters with cheaper juniors, but that would have slowed down the paper, and I had become accustomed to news arriving on Thursdays and Fridays rather than the Sunday deadline (with copious and conscientious apologies to my editors). Paper was another source of ridicule. As my reporters improved and articles arrived faster, I had to expand my paper to two or three pages. So, even though I was breaking sales records and delighting readers with high-quality journalism, I wasn’t making much profit because printing was costing too much extra money.

There was a point where I reached a happy medium where the newspaper was profitable, reputable and good quality. But I was feeling a little FOMO because The star She wasn’t printing the highest quality stories because she didn’t have a photographer. So I took my good money and hired a photographer, thinking that would solve my problem… but it made things worse. I didn’t realize that just because a photographer took photos wouldn’t be enough to put them on the page. I had to hire a developer and build them a darkroom, then hire a chemist and build their own room because the chemical smell affected employee morale. A reckless purchase I made to chase new technology turned into a torrent of expenses that eventually led me to bankruptcy. Well, yes there are definitely some metaphors here.
I don’t like News Tower Because it is professional flattery wrapped in a management chip. I love it because it honestly reveals why it’s so hard to find good journalism these days. Being a cowardly opportunist will bring you money but not quality. Do it right, and your newspaper will be choked to death by larger competitors with less scruples. After many failures, I’m on a roll where I scale slowly and as affordably as possible without taking any favors, whatsoever. I can see why Mr. Bezos does what he does, which is run the newspaper ethically difficult. I’ll do it anyway.
