Nintendo sure loves to impress us with its Game Boy stuff.
First, collect Lego Game Boy model Last year it looked like a real Game Boy (but it wasn’t). Now, for Pokemon 30th anniversaryNintendo and the Pokemon Group sell a collectible music player that looks like a small Game Boy and plays the original Pokemon Red/Blue original songs on interchangeable cartridges, one for each song.
Game Boy Jukebox is sold on Pokemon Center website For a whopping $70. It’s very small, and uses button batteries.
This level of silliness is standard issue for Nintendo: in just the past 18 months, we’ve had it warningA Super Mario talking flower And a Virtual Entertainment Boy. This new set is so tempting precisely because it looks like a smaller, more pocket-friendly Game Boy. Except it’s not a Game Boy game at all. It’s just a music player. Even the dot matrix “screen” is fake – it’s just an overlay that the cartridges display when opened.
The music played by this thing is Game Boy-accurate, right down to the little ping during playback. It makes my skin itchy for a new Game Boy (and one that isn’t Already made by Several other companies).
But come on. Make a A real collectible Game Boy game With pre-loaded games. A game that plays Pokemon Classic, Tetris, and more. You know you want it, Nintendo. It’s only a matter of time.
