Jony Ive and Sam Altman say they finally have a prototype of an artificial intelligence device

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and former Apple designer Jony Ive have kept the exact details of the first mysterious OpenAI device under wraps, but it appears they’ve settled on the design. In an interview with Laurene Powell Jobs on Demo Day 2025 for Emerson Collectivesaid they were currently prototyping the device, and when asked about the time frame, said it could arrive in “less than” two years.

Altman described the design as “simple and beautiful and fun,” adding: “There was a previous prototype that we were very excited about, but I had no feeling of, ‘I want to pick this thing up and take a bite of it,’ and then suddenly we finally got there.”

She similarly emphasized simplicity and eccentricity, saying: “I love solutions that cringe at seeming almost naïve in their simplicity, and I also love incredibly smart, sophisticated products that you want to touch, that feel intimidating, that you want to use almost carelessly, that you use almost without thinking, that are just tools.”

Altman went on to comment, “I hope that when people see it, they say, ‘That’s it!'” I replied, “Yes, they will.”
