I’ve tried dozens of cordless vacuums – Dyson’s PencilVac is the sleekest yet

Cordless vacuum cleaners are lighter than Upright Or corded vacuums but still have heavy-duty cleaning power. Some of the best cordless vacuums I’ve tested come from Dyson. The company features prominently on our list of companies Best cordless vacuumswins places for dust mopping and wet and dry mopping, although its models tend to be on the more expensive side.

New Dyson Vac pencilnow available for sale in the United States, different. As the name suggests, the shape of the PencilVac looks very similar to a pencil. It felt more like I was holding a broom than a vacuum cleaner. It’s also the lightest and thinnest vacuum I’ve ever used, measuring just 38mm in diameter and weighing less than 4 lbs (1.8 kg). The entire motor (Hyperdymium 140k motor) is fairly small enough to fit into the handle, and is no larger than the rest of the vacuum.

While cordless vacuums are easier to maneuver Of the ones with ropesthey can be very heavy, with some weighing up to 12 pounds, and even the lighter ones usually weigh around 6 or 7 pounds.

Using PencilVac

Getting the brush head rollers around the wooden floor in the Dyson showroom required minimal effort, and part of that comes from the design of the brush head. Instead of the standard single or double brush roller, the PencilVac has four conical brush bars (in a set of two on each side). They are designed to release hair when picked up and prevent it from wrapping around the brush bars and getting tangled. The front bar rotates in one direction while the rear bar rotates in the opposite direction, theoretically making cleaning more thorough.

The trash fills quickly, but is easy to empty

I used the vacuum briefly in a Dyson showroom to clean biscuit crumbs off the floor. The green LEDs are a feature you’ll find on the Dyson V15 Detect as well, and they make it easier to see dust and other debris. The mess was clean in just a few swipes, as the trash can successfully compacted the crumbs into a tightly packed mass. It was great to see all the dirt collecting right at the top of the trash can. Dyson claims that although it has a capacity of just 0.08 litres, the new bin design can collect five times more dust and debris in the same space.

That may be true, but I noticed that the trash filled up quickly and required emptying immediately between each demonstration. For reference, the average bin size on a cordless vacuum is usually between 0.5 liters on the small end and up to 1 liter on the larger end.

I don’t see the PencilVac as the main vacuum for big people Families with pets And children, although it can be a nice complement to the more common vacuum cleaner because it is very light and easy to use.

On the plus side, emptying the trash is easy with a unique piston-style ejection system that allows you to eject dust directly into the trash without having to shake or tap the trash. A few tools, such as the combination crevice tool and conical hair screw tool, are included and may make more light cleaning tasks easier, by helping you reach into tight spaces and difficult gaps and pull hair out of CarpetsSofas and mattresses.

The PencilVac comes with a magnetic charging dock, but unlike some competitors e.g The shark is clean and emptyit will not be self-empty. This is also Dyson’s first connected vacuum, allowing you to pair it with the MyDyson app to monitor things like battery life and filter maintenance.

Price and availability

Dyson PencilVac is Available in the United States Via Dyson L $599. The price makes it less expensive than higher-end models in Dyson’s lineup, like the $850 model Dyson V15 Absolute Reveal And $1150 Gen5 large size (at full price), but it’s more expensive than many of our top picks for cordless vacuums, like $180 Eureka Reaction 440. I’m looking forward to testing it in our lab in Louisville to see how it compares to other thin and lightweight options as well as more powerful models in cleaning performance.
