I never felt like I was done with my own Animal Crossing: New Horizons island. Despite playing every day for two years, and putting in 1,700 hours of gameplay, I somehow never finished the decoration. I had a lot of ideas For my island, sure, but actually implementing it was another story: the decking and reclaiming systems I helped create New horizons The great success was also slow, manual and cumbersome, and my patience with decorating and redecorating finally ran out.
A few years later, an unexpected update comes along to fix some of these vulnerabilities. Update 3.0 will launch on January 15, 2026, alongside the Switch 2 version of New horizons. And while the paid Switch 2 upgrade has some cool features (like Joy-Con 2 mouse controls for the interior), it’s the free update that brings all the major new features.
I recently attended a virtual preview of New horizons Upgrading and Upgrading A couple of caveats: I haven’t yet played the Switch 2 version or the new free content myself, and it’s hard to gauge the quality of the Switch 2 version’s visual and performance improvements over a Zoom call. (I still have some unanswered questions about the biggest performance issues on the original Switch, like choppy framerates on denser islands.) But upon seeing the 3.0 additions in action, it was easy to imagine myself finishing my island — or at least that island.
As shown in October announcement trailerUpdate 3.0 makes much-needed quality-of-life fixes. You’ll finally be able to craft multiple items at once, and The crafting process will pull materials from your overall storage space instead of your pockets, meaning you won’t have to do a bunch of inventory management just to craft some decorations. Then there’s Resetti’s reset service, which can help you clean out entire sections of your island instantly so you don’t have to pick everything up individually in order to redecorate. As some players noticed A very subtle but potentially influential change in movement during terraforming Hopefully it will make it a smoother process. Then, as if to show off these decor improvements, Nintendo also added Peace Islands.
It should not be confused with dreams, New horizonsAn online island sharing feature, Sleeping Islands additional Sandboxes for you to decorate and play with, where you can set the time of day and weather and magically conjure any item you have in your game catalog to decorate it, similar to Heaven is a happy home Downloadable content. You can build bridges and ramps instantly by talking to Lloid, instead of going through Tom Nook and waiting (or time traveling) every day. And while terraforming seems to work the same way on the Slumber Islands, the obvious addition of bombing while terraforming – rather than having to constantly reorient yourself manually – should help at least a little. (This is the first thing I’ll be testing on January 15, that’s for sure.)
For me, the worst part of the decor New horizons I had an idea, ordered all the furniture I needed over a period of days, tested the design, and realized it really happened no Seeing it the way I envisioned it, facing the arduous process of taking everything apart and starting over brick by brick — or at least, having to push and pull things for a while to see if I can make it work. Meanwhile, the design process I saw for Nintendo’s Slumber Island during the preview seemed faster and smoother. Trying out an idea or aesthetic in that environment does not seem like a difficult task.
Without any hands-on time, I can’t say if it will happen In reality Designing and decorating just got significantly easier with update 3.0. But I’m excited about the idea that I can go to the drawing board for Slumber Island and try out my designs before committing them (and the cost in bells to get it all done) to my home island. And maybe, if I really liked the feel of decorating, I’d make an entire Halloween-themed Slumber Island — the kind of island I’ve wanted to make for years but never did on my main island, where the seasons keep changing and effectively ruin the atmosphere.
