Instagram and Facebook violate EU illegal content rules

The panel says Meta imposes “confusing” hurdles for Facebook and Instagram users to report illegal content and challenge moderation decisions, finding that the platforms “appear to be using so-called ‘dark patterns’, or deceptive interface designs” that can hinder the removal of content such as child sexual abuse and terrorist material. Meta and TikTok were also found to have “cumbersome procedures and tools” that prevent researchers from accessing public data.

The two companies now face fines of up to six percent of their annual worldwide revenue, pending an official ruling. These platforms could challenge the EU’s findings or take measures to address these concerns before the Commission issues a final decision.
