NotebookLM is an “AI search tool,” as Google calls it, but its flexibility fits under many names. It’s great at breaking down complex topics into acceptable, easy-to-understand information, making it ideal for school, work, or creative brainstorming. To get started, feed in your sources (such as documents, plain text, or web links) and NotebookLM will analyze them, and allow you to do some cool things, like create audio overviews, flash cards, and more. Best of all, it will only produce outputs and responses based on your sources, so you’re less likely to provide false information or give hallucinatory answers.
Open Notebook is a free, open source project by Luis Noris, and it can do much of what NotebookLM can do in a privacy-focused way. You can also run Open Notebook with a local AI model if you want, or choose from popular chatbot options such as ChatGPT, Claude And others.
But there’s one thing to note: the Open Notebook setup isn’t for everyone. It can be especially difficult for someone who expects to “sign in and go” as is the case with NotebookLM. Unless you’re aware of the requirements, of which there are many, you may find yourself hitting a wall before you can even use Open Notebook. All that said, the fact that Open Notebook exists says a lot about NotebookLM itself and the desire to have a more privacy-focused version of the product. What Open Notebook lacks in polish it makes up for with flexibility and features that you don’t get (and probably won’t get) with NotebookLM any time soon.
The setup felt like a setup at times
I’m a self-described tinkerer, but the Open Notebook setup threw me off a few times. You’ll need a program called Docker to set up the container and some knowledge of how to run Linux. Although I’m good enough with Linux to break stuff, Docker and containers were new to me, and that was a sore point for the process.
If you’re not familiar with setting up containers or Linux, this will likely be a challenge, even with help Getting started guide. You still need help from the developer to get everything working as it should. The hurdles you encounter may also depend on the operating system you want to run Open Notebook on. I was using Windows, but MacOS seems to be the easiest to get started with.
When everything is set up correctly, you can access Open Notebook through your web browser, just as you would with NotebookLM, although there is no mobile app equivalent. Open Notebook is for those looking for a more private and flexible NotebookLM solution. Despite the speed of development from this Google offering, we can imagine that some Open Notebook offerings will never make it to NotebookLM for a number of reasons.
Run local LLMs
NotebookLM is a cloud-based application like other Google products, which means your data is always sent to the server and returned to your computer. Open Notebook addresses this problem by allowing you to install Local LLMs To use it so that your interactions are kept on the device. Add sources to multiple notebooks
Sources are everything for tools like NotebookLM and Open Notebook, and sometimes a single source may belong to multiple notebooks. As of now, sources in NotebookLM are strictly limited to a single notebook, but Open Notebook allows you to choose which notebooks you want to add a source to out of the gate. On the other hand, you can only add one source at a time. Google brought the ability to add multiple sources simultaneously to NotebookLM earlier this year.
“Search and ask” your knowledge base
Every time you add a resource to Open Notebook, it becomes part of your knowledge base, which goes beyond any specific notebook you’ve created. You can also search the entire knowledge base for specific keywords, or “ask” specific LLM questions based on your knowledge base sources.
Check the transitions
You can think of transformations as text output from the NotebookLM Studio panel. You can choose options such as condensed summary, paper analysis, reflections, key insights, and more. There is also a “Playground” option that enables you to try something out in the test area before applying it fully to one of your sources.
Create custom podcasts
Audio Overviews is one of the features that has attracted a lot of attention for NotebookLM. Open Notebook has its own feature called Podcasts which allows for more control. For example, you can create separate profiles for speakers and give them their own distinct personalities, but you can also play them individually on separate LLMs to create a dynamic podcast with different perspectives. If you’re not interested in creating your own speaker, there are a few preset speakers to choose from that you can use as is or duplicate and tweak as you see fit.
We need a tool like Open Notebook
Much of our digital lives are constantly being poured into the servers of big tech companies. So being able to regain a degree of control over that, especially with a powerful tool like Open Notebook, is a win. Whether privacy is your main concern or you have more options in AI models, Open Notebook will likely continue to get the attention it deserves and will grow from here.
