I got an early look at the Tensor Robocar, a self-driving vehicle you can own

As robotaxis creep into more cities, a new idea has emerged Self-driving car It’s scheduled to hit the road later this year — and you’ll be able to own it. in CESWe got an early look at what he has in store for the upcoming car, which is called Robocar tensioner.

This self-driving car adds a new touch to this category. Besides providing full self-driving capabilities, the Tensor Robocar gives owners the option of driving the car themselves. Simply sit in the driver’s seat, tap a button on the touchscreen and watch it slide away to reveal the steering wheel. The accelerator and brake pedals will also appear, and you are now in control.

Each passenger gets their own screen, for a total of four screens (sorry, rear middle seat passenger). The camera above each screen allows you to make a video call on the go. The person in the “driver’s” seat can also do this when the Robocar is operating autonomously.

I was impressed by the amount of legroom available in the front row of the car. I’m 5’8″ and have plenty of room to stretch out. The back seats have average legroom, so most people should be able to sit comfortably there as well.

Besides the individual passenger displays, the dashboard is pretty sparse. This is because you can use voice commands to do things like turn on the air conditioner, open the window, or open the trunk. I wasn’t able to see those commands executed during my demo, but a Promotional video for Tensor This concept is shown in action.

There are dozens of built-in microphones to hear your requests, whether you’re inside or outside the car. If this sounds alarming, Tensor says personal information such as the user’s location, preferences, and logs are processed and stored locally on the vehicle. If you’re still not convinced, there are physical camera covers and microphone off switches for added privacy.

The car is equipped with cameras, lidar, radar and ultrasonic sensors to detect objects and navigate on roads. Small outdoor displays at each corner of the car could display text such as a person’s name, or tell pedestrians it’s okay to cross. The car is silver and black with elegant lines, and looks like a combination of Waymo’s Jaguar I-Pace Fleet and Tesla Model Y.

A Robocar may appeal to people who like the idea of commuting while working, watching a movie, or making a video call, but also want to maintain a relaxing (or revving) experience while driving.

Tensor launched a Partnership with Lyft In October, this will allow Robocar owners to send their cars out into the world to drive passengers autonomously, earning them some extra cash. If that sounds familiar, Tesla has shared a similar vision for its upcoming owners Robotaxi Be part of an independent tour booking service. It’s not clear when exactly the purpose-built Tesla Robotaxi will appear, though CEO Elon Musk has said it will be “before 2027.”

Tensor did not share pricing for the Robocar, but it will be marketed as a luxury vehicle. We’ll likely learn more as we get closer to the expected launch period later this year. Robocar will first become available in certain parts of the US, Europe and the UAE.
