When I started using the sign for the first time, I would like to call friends who use our phone numbers. Now, I use a signal to find people to meet with stories, which is why some of my social media posts and articles include noting people telling how they can access me in the application.
Needless to say, I prefer not to have a phone number online. Therefore, it is comfortable that the signal allows you to create a user name to keep your phone number for a special. Other people can find you the app using this username, and they will not be able to see your phone number. You can keep it mysterious and call yourself what you want

Change your profile name and user name
When creating a signal for the first time, you will be asked to set a profile and image name. If you want to change this later:
- Click your profile icon to move to the settings.
- Click on your profile icon again, then on a person icon to change the profile name.
You can also select the image editing to add an image.
- Using Android, press your profile icon. This will bring you settings. Click your profile icon again.
- Using iOS, go to the settings and then click your profile icon again.
- Then, click on the “@” to edit your username.
Once a user name is set, people can still search for you using your phone number, unless you change a separate setting. If you do not want people to find you according to your phone number:
- Go to the privacy settings. On Android, click on the three points on the right upper, and go to Settings> Privacy> Phone Number. On iOS, from your personal icon on the left top, go to Settings> Privacy> Phone Number.
- Once you are, you can do this everyone or no one You can find you according to your number.
- You can also choose who will be able to see your number (again, it’s everyone or no one.)
You still need a phone number to register. But last year, a signal Declare User phone numbers will not be visible to the people who talk to them by default.
A message and call other people
When you open the application, there is an icon similar to the speech bubble similar to the sign logo. Click this to see your messages.
To chat with a new person, press the pencil button on the box. From there, you can search for a connection with the username or their phone number. You can also click on New group To start a group chat (you can also call it).
I also like to make sound calls to sign – it’s a great alternative if you don’t want to leave any messages behind evidence.
- Click the icon that looks like a phone reception in the old school to make a call.
- Then click on the symbol that looks like a phone reception device with an overly mark next to it to search for a contact with the user name or phone number.
- To organize a collective call, you can click “Create a call link”, then copy and share this link with others.
Share the fast response code with your username
Like Venmo, Signal can create a QR code that you can share to facilitate people finding you on the app. To withdraw this:
- From the settings, click your profile icon
- Click on Quick response icon or link.
Prepare titles for other users
If it is easy to remember who is on the app, you can also set nicknames for your contacts. Just go to a person’s profile, and click nickname Next to the pencil icon. This will allow you to set the name you see when sending a message to this person, and there is also a field for any notes you want to last about this person.
It is a good digital hygiene to delete messages after a certain period of time, and the signal allows you to do this automatically. under SettingsClick on privacy And then The messages disappear. This allows you to set a virtual period of time to disappear messages whenever a new chat begins with someone.
You can also create different settings for every person or group you talk to.
- Click on the identification file icon in your message record.
- Then click The messages disappear To set a specific period of time.
The signal includes a set of options from 30 seconds to 4 weeks from the transmission time. It also allows you to set a dedicated time to delete messages.
For an additional layer of protection, I set a screen lock on my phone and apply my signal to reduce the risks of anyone other than vision of my messages. To set a screen lock on the application, go to Settings> Privacy> Screen Lock. This option is only available on phones with a screen lock, not on the desktop version.
Transfer your account between devices
Suppose you want to use your signal account on your phone and a computer or iPad, the signal allows you to connect multiple devices with a phone number – but there are limits. You can connect up to five devices with one phone, but you cannot connect to another phone. You cannot connect Android tablets either.
From the settings, click Associated devices To add a new device. You will need to download the signal application on the device you want to connect and withdraw the QR code that you will wipe it using your phone.
Once you add a new device, you can He chooses Whether you want to synchronize chatting and call a record through the past 45 days. Keep in mind that every device you connect can create another opportunity for someone to enter your messages, so be careful.
