Michael Calore: Yes. My favorite not-so-subtle product placement was the show Entourage from HBO. He was on TV, I don’t know, 15 years ago.
Lauren Goode: Oh, I remember that.
Michael Calore: And the characters were saying to each other, “I’ll send you a BBM.”
Lauren Goode: Time capsule number.
Michael Calore: Yes. Which is like, even if you have a Blackberry—
Lauren Goode: Yes, you never said that.
Michael Calore: No one ever said that
Lauren Goode: No, that’s very true.
Michael Calore: They will send you a text message.
Lauren Goode: amazing.
Michael Calore: But no, I’m going to BBM you.
Andy Greenberg: Just the fact that we know what BBM-ing is is kind of the way it works.
Lauren Goode: Or maybe it’s more, “What is this, guys? I don’t remember that. I’m too young.” Okay, Andy, give us your WIRED, you nerd.
Andy Greenberg: Well, I’m not a video game reporter, but I bought – everyone is talking about this game Silksong. It was $20 on Switch. I bought it for my 9 year old son and thought I would play this cute little game and I can’t believe how hard it is. No one talks about the fact that this hugely popular game makes you want to cry. Like me, not my son, like me, the adult. I can’t stop playing.
But I’ve been more frustrated playing this game than I have been with anything else in my life or work for years. This is my observation of very amateur video games that have been getting very easy for a while now Candy Crush and farmville and Angry birds Things you basically can’t afford to lose. People seem to love it and the games have become incredibly easy. And now it feels like we’re in this age where games are so challenging, even those games that seem like normal kids’ games are actually some of the most challenging things you’ll ever do in your life. And I actually think it’s great. So, yeah, I would say TIRED are easy games and WIRED are games that are so hard they make me want to cry.
