It is similar to how red light works Face masks work. These masks are typically worn for about 10 minutes and always have a light wavelength level in the 600nm range (usually 630-660), as does the HigherDose hat, but you’ll also see masks with higher levels of infrared light that promise healing and reduced inflammation. The cap provides the main level of red light therapy only and features 120 medical grade LEDs arranged in a semicircle for easy wear around your head.
Technology is Approved by the Food and Drug AdministrationWhich means that the FDA has determined that this device is substantially equivalent to an existing device that is legally marketed. HigherDose specifically states that the cap uses “FDA-approved technology known to stimulate hair growth and improve scalp health,” but this is not the same as FDA-approved, which undergoes more rigorous testing. The FDA approval is the only case we’ve actually seen with red light devices, and it’s the same one you’ll see on our website Red light mask recommendations.

Funny enough, the HigherDose hat looks and feels like a real hat. There are other devices we test that look straight from Star Wars X-Wingbut I can easily wear a HigherDose hat in public and not receive any looks or questions. You can barely tell it’s lit while you’re wearing it; The only giveaway is the small battery on the back of the hat. You can also easily remove the battery pack if you want to wear the hat without any indication that it’s a gadget. There is an adjustment strap on the back and even a slot through which I can put a ponytail while the battery pack is attached. It’s a legitimate baseball cap that hides 120 light bulbs inside.
Using this hat also reminded me of using it Infrared brush. Infrared brushes lock in moisture, so on some days I wore this, my hair felt a little oily afterwards (usually because I was procrastinating on wash day). I would usually try to wear this before showering, as it would lock in more moisture, and my hair tends to be on the greasy side at the roots. However, depending on your hair texture and oil level, this may not happen.

I took a bad quick photo the first week of using the HigherDose hat. You can see the fragile section of regrowth in my part line, along with the healing scab that was an obvious point of irritation that targeted my compulsion to pull. That photo is from September. Compared to the photos I took in January, you can easily see the difference. Thicker roots, fewer spots, and a short, pesky patch have grown well over the weeks I’ve been wearing the cap. My scalp feels better, and the overall texture of my hair feels softer.
