Are you listening to your songs but your neighbor feels chatty? Ordering a latte but your hands are full so you can’t pause your podcast? Conversation detection, which is a feature for some Headphones And headphones, they can be a game changer. Instead of removing your Active noise canceling earbuds Or using your hands to pause the sound, this handy feature detects sounds, pauses the sound, and turns off the noise cancellation.
This harmony between the soothing comfort of noise cancellation and the noisy real world is extremely useful and easy to set up. However, there are some important things to note to get the best experience with automatic conversation detection.
Most noise-cancelling earbuds, incl Those from Boss And many other manufacturers, have a mode called awareness, awareness or transparency. This enhances the ambient sound, often in the audio frequency ranges. What I’m talking about here is the detection feature that makes switching to this mode automatic instead of having to manually select it.
You’ll generally see this feature on leading headphones from Apple, Sony, Google, and Samsung. Each one calls it a little different: Apple has Conversation Awareness, Samsung has Voice Detection, Google has Conversation Detection, and Sony’s got Speak for Chat.
Conversation modes can generally be accessed in the settings of the headset’s companion app. If your phone and headphones are Apple or Google, go to your phone’s settings and access this feature by tapping on Headphones. Always make sure all of your devices’ firmware is up to date. Apple iOS also provides access to Conversation Awareness via the Control Center that appears when you swipe down from the top of the screen.
The small array of microphones built into your earbuds/headphones for calls and noise cancellation will detect your voice for Conversation Awareness Mode. Many headphones have built-in accelerometers for features such as head tracking and ear/head detection; These can also be used to capture jaw movement to verify that it is you speaking and not someone nearby.
Samsung has a separate but related Siren Detect feature that automatically turns on transparency mode when a siren is detected, so you can hear what’s going on in an emergency. (Some brands do the opposite and raise the ANC level when a loud sound is detected.)
Once activated, conversation recognition modes also either pause or reduce the volume currently playing. This behavior varies by brand. For example, Apple devices lower the music volume while pausing podcast playback. Instead, Samsung turns down all sound, while Sony and Google devices pause all sound. Ideally, you would be able to choose the behavior, but this is currently still rare. Apple is adding Conversation Boost, which uses microphones and accelerometers to amplify the voice of the person you’re talking to via head tracking.
Then, either through some technological quirk or simply by sensing when you stop speaking (adjustable on some brands, including Sony), the headphones detect that the conversation is over and return to the previous audio, at the same volume and in the same noise-cancelling mode. Many models are better than people at figuring out the end of a conversation.
Any model with this feature will also allow you to manually turn on/off conversation mode through a long button press or similar action.
Conversation discovery is powered by for you voice, not someone else’s, so you may end up asking people to repeat what they’re saying when you notice them talking to you. This question will launch conversation mode. Depending on how a particular model’s detection works, it may require both earbuds to be in your ears for it to work.
Sometimes, conversation detection can be inadvertently triggered by coughing or singing along with music or other random ambient sounds. It may also not work well in very noisy environments, such as construction sites and airplanes. Some models let you adjust the sensitivity, which is something we’d like to see more of in future firmware updates and releases.
Frequent podcast or audiobook listeners should opt for headphones that pause all conversational audio, or at least play it smart by differentiating between audio types and pausing podcasts/audiobooks so you don’t miss anything. Unfortunately, Apple and Samsung won’t pause videos from services like Netflix or YouTube; They just turn down the volume.
As with all features that use sensors and microphones, Conversation detection will affect battery life To an extent, though it’s not a huge drain.
Conversation detection modes aren’t for everyone, especially lively people who talk to themselves out loud, scream at the news or sing along to their tunes. If you automatically take out your earbuds to talk to others, you also won’t need this feature (unless you want to change that habit). In the future, I’d like to see more adjustability, but even how this feature is implemented in the current crop of headphones and earbuds, it’s an excellent upgrade for the fluidity of digital life.
