Just before Black Friday holiday shopping seasonGoogle is adding several shopping-related features on Thursday that aim to use both Gemini and the company’s AI mode of search to help find items that suit specific tastes and specific prices.
Google breaks these new shopping features into “conversation” and “agent” to describe how they work. The conversation is a lot like writing a prompt to Google’s Gemini or in the search engine’s AI mode: you can ask for recommendations for a product based on an individual’s taste or needs, and you’ll receive suggestions that are as closely related to the request as possible. During an event to showcase these shopping features, one example involved searching in AI mode for a skin moisturizer that is especially useful for the cold winter months. You are then returned a series of moisturizer options and, with a prompt to follow, can be organized into a chart to compare details such as the ingredients in the product.
While these conversation options can help with searching for items, Gemini’s “agent” shopping options contain tasks that can be assigned to the assistant to help you find items at the desired price. This has price tracking – an existing feature – and will be joined by the ability to tell Gemini to make a purchase if the item you want reaches a price threshold of your choice. This ability to make a direct purchase will launch with Wayfair, Chewy, Quince, and select Shopify merchants.
Google’s two-sided calling technology will now provide the option to contact multiple businesses to ask questions or find a product at a specific price.
For items that are primarily available locally, Google is also used Dual contact technology In order to contact multiple stores on your behalf. One example offered by Google representatives offers a duplex service for calling musical instrument stores to find a guitar within a certain price range. The Duplex AI system will speak with store employees over the phone, ask follow-up questions, then provide the information in a summary sent via email.
While Google is particularly highlighting its shopping features ahead of the holiday shopping season, competing AI chatbots have also created their own features to improve searching and purchasing items. Opic’s AAIP It announced its own set of shopping features earlier this year, and Confusion has its own shopping features Together with A Partnership with PayPal.
