When is Black Friday?
This year, Black Friday is November 28th. It always falls on the Friday after Thanksgiving, which falls on the fourth Thursday in November. There are hundreds of price cuts and big sales from the largest online retailers already available.
What stores have Black Friday sales?
Almost all major retailers are offering lots of offers and discounts for Black Friday. Think companies like Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart, as well as more specialized retailers like B&H Photo, GameStop, and Dell. Major retailers, such as Target and Walmart, will offer online-only savings in addition to traditional in-person sales. Keep in mind that physical locations may also run out of stock, so there are pros and cons to shopping in-store and online.
When do Black Friday sales start?
Technically, Black Friday sales tend to start a few weeks before Thanksgiving, with the pace increasing as actual Black Friday approaches. And with Cyber Week starting two days after Black Friday, you’ll have more time to enjoy savings on both events.
Are Black Friday deals only available in person?
In general, no. Black Friday is largely focused on technology, home, and deals that exist separately in person and online. With the increase in online shopping, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are starting to blend together a bit. This doesn’t mean that all deals are the same, but it does mean that finding new deals is becoming more of a challenge.

Why are they called Black Friday and Cyber Monday?
The term “black” has historically been used to refer to traumatic or catastrophic events. Black Friday’s first known use of the Friday after Thanksgiving was to refer to the practice of workers calling in sick the day after Thanksgiving in the early 1950s. Around the same time, US police adopted the term to describe traffic conditions during the first major holiday shopping appointment.
After attempts to transition to the term “Big Friday” failed, merchants attempted to refine the term “Black Friday” in later years, suggesting that its origin was not due to the terrible traffic the shopping spree created, but because the profit it generated put stores back in the “black” financially.
Then, in 2005, the National Retail Federation coined the term “Cyber Monday” because it noticed a spike in online traffic on the Monday after Thanksgiving. At the time, it was thought this was because people were making online purchases while they were at work after the holidays, so their children couldn’t see any gift purchases and because work computers usually had faster Internet connections. There was some talk about calling the date Black Monday or Blue Monday — because the hyperlinks are blue — but in the end, everyone settled on the more futuristic Cyber Monday. In 2014, Cyber Monday became the largest online shopping day in the country.
