General Motors says the new battery chemistry will enable the range of 400 miles

General Motors collaborates with LG to develop Li -Mengenis -rich batteries (LMR) for its electrical trucks and four -wheel drive vehicles. The auto company says that the new chemistry is safer, more intense for energy and less expensive than current technology.

General Motors aims to become the first automobile manufacturer to deploy LMR batteries in EVS, with plans to start trade in the United States by 2028. Last month, Ford announced that it will start adopting LMR batteries for EVS, but not until 2030.

In EV batteries, the cathode, or the negative pole, is usually made with NCM – nickel, cobalt, and magnesium. Cobalt A major component of this mixtureBut it is also the most expensive battery material and Mining under the circumstances that violate human rights oftenWhich leads to the “blood diamond from the batteries”. As a result, General Motors and other companies Like Tesla Hurry to create a cobalt free battery. Alternatively, LMR battery cells use a higher percentage of manganese, affordable and abundant, while providing greater power and energy density.

GM has established approximately 300 LMR cells in full size because it worked with the LG power solution to break the code on chemistry.

“We would like to displace it as cheap like dirt,” says Andrew Uri, a battery engineer in General Motors.

The current GM crop of Chevys and Cadillacs uses high nickel batteries, which provides enough energy for about 300-320 miles of range. General Motors says new LMR batteries are more intense, with greater space efficiency due to its published shape, allowing up to 400 miles of the range. Jamorian cells are mobilized in solid cases and are generally believed to be less complex to manufacturing than cylindrical cells.

We hope that less complex materials and cheaper materials will lead to low -cost EVS, which was a major challenge to convert the auto industry into electric cars.

“The EV growth rate is truly dependent on the speed of low costs over time,” said Vice President of GM. “This is our biggest arm. Batries constitute approximately 30 to 40 percent of the cost of vehicles. If you can significantly decrease this as we do here, it ends with a lower cost of the consumer.”

Cells will be produced by Ultium cells, the GM and joint LG project, where pre -production is expected to start in late 2027. The final design will be validated at the General Motors Battery Development Center in Warren, Michigan, which opens earlier of that year, in addition to the LG Energy Solution facility. Last year, General Motors sold its share at Lansing, to Lansing.

“We would like to displace it as cheap as dirt.”

General Motors says LMR batteries are the result of “for decades in search and investment for decades” that will give her the leg to their competitors. General Motors began searching for the Mengenis ion battery cells in 2015, including the primary models of LMR cells at the innovation center for battery Wallace.

There can be some challenges to produce LMR batteries. LMR materials are known to suffer from a significant loss of capacity, which may lead to a decrease in driving domains and the deterioration of thermal stability.

General Motors says she is aware of these challenges and is confident that she can create the production process in a way to reduce these risks to a minimum. The auto company engineers say that LMR batteries are expected to perform similar to the first generation batteries of General Motors, even at maximum temperatures.

Car manufacturers are racing to reduce EV costs before War Trade to President Donald Trump It raises the prices of the main materials imported from China, the world’s leading product for EV batteries, where more than 70 percent of the production of global ion lithium batteries are made there.

“We expect to increase the settlement of our materials for the battery supply series between now and 2028,” says Kelti. “And LMR is part of that story, because we get more materials locally.”
