ExpressVPN unveils the industry’s first hybrid browser extension to provide flexible online privacy

ExpressVPN has launched what it calls The industry’s first hybrid VPN browser extensiondesigned to give customers greater flexibility in protecting their online activity. The new extension can work alone to secure just browser traffic, or it can pair with the ExpressVPN desktop app to extend protection across the entire device.

This approach blends two traditionally separate tools. Browser extensions usually act as lightweight proxies, although they are full VPN applications Encrypt all internet traffic on the device. The main feature of the release is Smart Routing, which allows you to set specific VPN locations or settings for individual websites. Browser-centric design reflects how much modern online activity takes place in web browsers, from streaming and shopping to remote work. By focusing protection at this level while still offering device-level encryption, the company positions the tool as convenient and comprehensive.

Expanding into virtual reality

ExpressVPN is also expanding its reach into virtual reality by supporting Meta’s Meta Quest platform. A dedicated VPN app is now available in the Meta Quest App Store, with a browser-only version of the hybrid extension expected to follow. This allows you to secure web activity within VR environments where traditional VPN apps are often unavailable or difficult to install.

The move signals a broader shift in the VPN market as privacy tools adapt to new devices and use cases. As browsing extends beyond laptops and smartphones to headphones and other connected devices, flexible security models such as hybrid extensions may become increasingly important.
