On Friday, Encyclopedia Britannica and dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster filed a lawsuit against OpenAI alleging that it used copyrighted content to train its AI, then produced responses that were “substantially similar” to its content, as previously reported by Reuters.
According to Britannica, OpenAI repeatedly copied its content without permission, saying: “GPT-4 itself has saved much of Britannica’s copyrighted content and will produce near-verbatim copies of large portions upon request. The saved examples are unauthorized copies that it (OpenAI) has used to train its models, including GPT-4.”
the lawsuit It goes on to include examples of responses from OpenAI models alongside Britannica’s text, with entire passages appearing identical word for word. Britannica also claims that OpenAI is “cannibalizing” web traffic by generating responses that “replace or directly compete with Britannica’s content,” rather than directing users to its website the way a traditional search engine might do.
