On October 24, X said In a job It was requiring users who rely on passkeys or hardware security keys (such as Yubikeys) as a method of two-factor authentication to re-register with the x.com domain. (Users using the authenticator app are not affected.)

X said this was part of an effort to stop the old domain twitter.com, which currently redirects to x.com. This change went into effect in May 2024. The problem is that the passkeys and security keys are digitally tied to the old twitter.com domain and cannot be transferred to x.com. This means that users have to cancel the registration and re-register manually with the new x.com domain.

As part of the transition, X warned that after November 10, customers’ accounts will be locked until they re-register or choose another method of two-factor authentication.

Now that the deadline has passed, many users are reporting that they have been locked out of their accounts and cannot re-register their passkey or security key, citing error messages or being stuck in an endless loop.

This is the latest case to hit Company X, which is now owned by Elon Musk after he bought Twitter, as it was known then, for 44 billion dollars. Since taking charge of the social media site, the company has witnessed Large-scale layoffs and Countless disagreements.

X did not respond to a request for comment, but Musk, who now owns X, was posting as usual, and was presumably unaffected by the change.
