Throughout this period, Trump continued to post about the Peters case on Truth Social, specifically targeting Polis, whom he Named “COLORADO GOVERNOR SLEAZEBAG” on December 3. And on New Year’s Eve, Trump Books on social truth: “It’s hard to wish Peters a Happy New Year, but for the scumbag governor and disgusting ‘Republican’ (Reno!) da… I wish them only the worst. I hope they rot in hell. Release Tina Peters!” (Trump has posted about Peters eight times on Truth Social over the past nine months.)
At the time, Peters’ legal team, led by Peter Ticktin, who attended the New York Military Academy with Trump, was getting to work. On December 7, he sent Ticktin A nine-page letter To Trump explaining his client’s case and asking for pardon. Four days later, on December 11, Trump came Books on social truth: “Today I grant Tina a full pardon for her attempts to expose voter fraud in the rigged 2020 presidential election.” Although Trump does not have the power to pardon those convicted of state charges, Ticktin claimed applies to his client.
Peters’ legal team has applied for clemency from the governor. While Polis was initially unlikely to welcome the idea, he has hinted in recent weeks that he is considering reducing her sentence, which he described as “harsh.”
“You look at every case on a compassionate basis on the merits.” Polis told CBS newly. “You have someone who is non-violent, a first-time offender, an older person. On the other hand, does she take full responsibility for her crime? We don’t look at this in isolation.”
The potential change of heart for Polis has left many in Colorado scratching their heads. Earlier this month, Griswold, along with the Colorado County Clerk and the Director of the State Clerks Association, Send a message to Polis He urged him not to commute Peters’ sentence.
“I don’t think surrendering to a vengeful president makes the punishment stop,” Griswold told WIRED. “Trump is a lawless president. He ignores the law, he ignores the Constitution, and when people don’t surrender, he starts retaliating. I think surrender leads to more illegal actions and heinous actions on the part of the president.”
“Donald Trump and I have known each other since we were 15 years old,” Ticktin told WIRED, adding that he spoke to the president about the issue directly but saying Trump’s actions were not about retaliation: “By Governor Polis standing up to Donald Trump for something that is unreasonable, it brings more attention to the state and causes the state to be looked at more, (but) I don’t think this is retaliation against Donald Trump.”
The White House did not respond to a request for comment on whether Trump was running a retaliation campaign against Colorado, but instead provided a list of reasons behind taking each action — even including responses to two issues WIRED did not raise: child care funding and disaster relief.
Election clerks across Colorado have already met to discuss a possible pardon for Peters, and after an online meeting this month, all but one member of the Colorado County Clerks Association agreed to the wording of the letter Griswold sent to Polis.
