Dyson’s first-ever portable fan is available just in time for summer heatwaves

Dyson is known for its air technology in its products, including… Brooms, Tower fans and Hair dryers. There’s one frontier Dyson hasn’t explored yet: portable fans.

On Wednesday, the company announced its first portable fan, the HushJet Mini Cool, and it just arrived at my house for testing.

“We were inspired by a simple but universal problem: staying cool while moving,” Emily Blanes, a design engineer at Dyson, told CNET. “From hotter commutes and crowded events to travel, menopause, pregnancy and everyday comfort, people are increasingly looking for fast, efficient cooling that fits seamlessly into modern life.”

Using the new HushJet air supply system, the 7.5-ounce fan has five speeds and a boost mode for airflow at up to 55 mph. Its three-in-one shape allows you to hold it in your hand, wear it hands-free around your neck, or place it on a table or desk.

With its 5,000 mAh battery that charges in three hours, the HushJet Mini Cool can operate for six hours.

The 1.5-inch diameter, which is about the size of a watch face, makes it stylish and portable. Dyson supersonic hair dryer and Dyson pencil vac The cordless vacuum also has the same diameter as the HushJet Mini Cool.

Despite its 55 mph top speed, the HushJet was designed with sound and shared spaces in mind. The nozzle, which tilts in two directions at 45 and 90 degrees, and a honeycomb mesh liner dampen the fan motor’s 65,000 RPM hum. The fan operates at 52 dB (weighted dB) to 68 dB, rising to 72.5 dB when in boost mode.

For reference, the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders states that normal conversation ranges 60 to 70 dB. Sounds of 70 decibels or less are generally considered safe.

Rather than spraying the body with water or using skin-contact cooling, the HushJet Mini Cool uses evaporative cooling, which accelerates airflow near the skin (rather than directly on it) to help moisture evaporate more quickly, Blanes said.

Besides hygiene, safety was the main concern, which is why the device features a blade-free design.

The HushJet Mini Cool comes in three colors: Stone/Blush (white and blush pink), available now; Garnet/Sky (red and sky blue), available in May; and Ink/Cobalt (Cobalt Blue Ink), available in June. You also get a lanyard, charging stand, USB-C cable, and a travel bag.

“Ultimately, this product reflects our passion for taking Dyson’s reliable engineering and airflow technology beyond the home,” says Blanes.
