By a Calfatters Capitol reporter Jean Quang:
The California Senate voted this week to cancel the state’s calls for the Constitutional Convention, one of which many Democrats supported only two years ago at the insistence of governor Gavin New.
With the administration of President Donald Trump, he was also headed by Republicans who ruling Congress, Saint. WienerDemocrat from San Francisco said the state should be wrong on the part of caution by canceling its last seven calls for a constitution rewriting session.
Congress can convene such a session if 34 countries require one – although it has never actually happened before. California is one of 28 states with pending calls for the Book Convention, according to the Nomantic common cause, and some Republicans nationally insisted on one. Constitutional changes require 38 countries to ratify.
As is currently written, the Constitution guarantees such American rights as a free speech, equal protection of laws and citizenship of firstborn rights.
His resolution to cancel California’s calls adopted the Senate on Monday by 27 votes for benefit, including one Republican and 15 of the Democrats, who had previously supported a convention. The resolution is directed to installation. If accepted, this will cancel the seven hanging calls from California, dating back to 1911 to amend the Constitution on issues ranging from labor laws to financing the campaign.
But to cancel the calls, legislators will need the support of Newsom – who demanded the latest constitutional resolution in 2023, as it is positioned as the national leader of arms control. In 2023, he proposed amendment to the Constitution to require a federal minimum age of 21 years for purchases of firearms, universal background inspections, a waiting period between buying and receiving a gun and a ban on the sale of weapons. As CalMatters reported last year, these efforts have gone anywhereWith no other state that joined the call.
The Newsom Office did not respond when it still supports a convention under the current Presidential Administration and Congress.
