California DEMS Rethink Newsom Call for Constitutional Convention

The California Senate voted this week to cancel the state’s calls for the Constitutional Convention, one of which many Democrats supported only two years ago at the insistence of governor Gavin New.

His resolution to cancel California’s calls adopted the Senate on Monday by 27 votes for benefit, including one Republican and 15 of the Democrats, who had previously supported a convention. The resolution is directed to installation. If accepted, this will cancel the seven hanging calls from California, dating back to 1911 to amend the Constitution on issues ranging from labor laws to financing the campaign.

But to cancel the calls, legislators will need the support of Newsom – who demanded the latest constitutional resolution in 2023, as it is positioned as the national leader of arms control. In 2023, he proposed amendment to the Constitution to require a federal minimum age of 21 years for purchases of firearms, universal background inspections, a waiting period between buying and receiving a gun and a ban on the sale of weapons. The Newsom Office did not respond when it still supports a convention under the current Presidential Administration and Congress.
