Sacramento police have accused the California Senator of driving under the influence of a drug after a crash on Monday afternoon for several blocks from Capitol, which happened less than an hour before it was to be on the floor of the state’s legislature.

CalMatters viewed footage from the protective camera of a nearby office building that appears to be showing Senator Sabrina Cervantes37, he was not guilty of the crash, which happened around 1:00 pm on Monday.

The footage shows a white SUV, which rolls through a stop sign and climbs into the black sedan of Cervantes at the intersection of the 14th and S streets in Midtown Sacramento. Cervantes seems to have had the right on the road while driving east on S.

In a written statement to Politico, Cervantes said she “did nothing wrong” and the crash was not her fault. Her office did not respond to requests for comment on Wednesday.

“The laboratory results I was looking for in the hospital show strongly had no alcohol in my system. I expect this to be quickly and fairly resolved,” the river democrat in front of PoliticoS

“I was welcomed by the officers of the Sacramento Police Department, falsely accused of driving under the influence and involuntarily detained for several hours at the hospital.

Prosecutors are waiting for the results of toxicology before deciding whether to have charges, Sacramento District Prosecutor’s Office said.

Police claim it is a drug not drinks

Sacramento Police Department spokesman Anthony Gamble said Cervantes was quoted according to the California Statute, which prohibits driving under the influence of “every medicine”. This includes a recipe or even over -the -counter medicines.

“Senator Cervantes was cited for suspicion of driving a motor vehicle under the influence of a central nervous system depressant,” Gamble told Calmatters on Wednesday in an email.

At the hospital where police met with Cervantes, they “observed objective signs of intoxication and conducted an investigation by DUI”, then quoted the Senator on suspicion of Dui, a crime, Gamble said.

“Based on objective signs, employees believed that Cervantes was under the influence of a depressant of the central nervous system,” Gamble said. “The blood was drawn and it would take time to come back.”

Gamble declined to say what the “objective signs” were and did not handle Cervantes’ claims. CalMatters has applied for public records looking for body chamber and police reports.

Asked why the employees did not take Cervantes in custody, Gamble said “every investigation is different.” State legislation gives a wide range of reasons for police to release people cited for offenses.

Other Dui arrests of other legislators

Gamble said the senator was driving a state vehicle, Toyota Camry, when it was hit at the intersection of Ford Explorer. The reason for the collision is still being investigated, he said.

State Fleet manager called police to report the collision, Gamble said, and told police that the Cervantes headquarters was taken to the hospital.

Calmatters reviewed footage shows that Cervantes talks to the other driver and waits close to his vehicle until men arrive in business clothing. They take off a suitcase and other items from its vehicle before they leave.

Cervantes Chief of Staff Cesar Anda did not immediately respond to Calmatters today.

The Explorer driver shows no signs of intoxication or injuries, Gamble said.

Cervantes moved to the Senate last year after serving in the 2016 Assembly.

Cervantes is hardly the first member of the legislature accused of driving while under influence.

Forms late. Dave MinDemocrat from Irvine, who was elected in November at a congress in another close race, also was quoted in 2023 for drunk driving in SacramentoS He pleaded guilty.

Former member of the Assembly Wendy Carrilo, Democrat from Los Angeles, Also pleaded without a competition Last year, Dui received the previous year in Los Angeles.

She lost a competition last year for the Los Angeles Municipal Council. Later she introduced legislation To train students for the harms of excessive drinking. Carilo told Calmatters last month that it’s been sober ever since. She said she plans to run for a state senate.

Cervantes’ sister, Clarice Cervantes, who seeks unsuccessfully to replace her sister in the meeting last November, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving In the summer of 2023S She later pleaded guilty. It was her second dui for less than 10 Years, according to the Press-Enterprise River.
