Blue Origin’s TeraWave satellite internet network will transfer data at 6 terabytes per second

Jeff Bezos’ space company Blue Origin just announced a satellite internet network called… Terrawave Which will be able to provide data speeds of up to 6 terabytes per second, and is targeted towards enterprises, data centers and government clients.

The TeraWave constellation will use a mix of 5,280 low-Earth orbit satellites and 128 medium-Earth orbit satellites, and Blue Origin plans to deploy the first satellites in late 2027. It’s not immediately clear how long Blue Origin expects it will take to build out the entire network.

The low-Earth orbit satellites that Blue Origin is building will use a radio frequency connection and have a maximum data transfer speed of 144 gigabits per second, while the medium-Earth array will use an optical link that can achieve a much higher speed of 6 terabits per second. For reference, SpaceX’s Starlink speed limit currently stands at 400Mbps — though it plans to launch upgraded satellites that will provide Data transfer speed of 1 Gbps in the future.

“TeraWave adds a satellite layer to your existing network infrastructure, providing connectivity to locations that cannot be reached by traditional methods,” reads the satellite network’s new website.

The announcement of the TeraWave network comes just a few months after Bezos’ other company, Amazon, announced a rebranding of its consumer-oriented satellite network. that network, Leo calledwill eventually consist of about 3,000 satellites in low Earth orbit and provide more traditional broadband speeds.

Combined, these two networks could provide stronger competition to SpaceX’s Starlink, which has become the leading satellite internet provider with more than 9 million customers. Starlink currently sells its connectivity to everyday consumers, commercial customers (such as airlines), and governments.

However, Amazon and Blue Origin’s networks are different.

“We identified unmet needs in customers who were seeking enterprise-grade Internet access with faster speeds, symmetrical upload/download speeds, more redundancy, and rapid scalability of their networks. TeraWave solves these problems,” Blue Origin said in a statement to TechCrunch.

Blue Origin has spent years developing a number of projects, and is best known for the short trips to space it offers on its small New Shepard rocket.

The company has recently begun to emerge as a multi-faceted commercial space player.
