encountered for the first time LetPot as a brand earlier this year, during its testing LPH-SE Senior Hydroponic growing system for my guide to Best indoor gardening systems. They are positioned as substitutes for long-time lovers OG Aerogarden tabletop hydroponic systemsLetPot countertop gardens (which are popular enough to own Their subreddit) allow you to grow any seeds you want — without the need for special pods — using inexpensive baskets and sponges that are ubiquitous on Amazon and around the world. 20 cents each. (LetPot kits come with enough baskets and sponges to get started, but no seeds.) I regularly recommend the LetPot version as the best budget option for anyone looking to get into hydroponic gardening.
Since then, I’ve tried a variety of smart gardening devices from the brand, which has been based in Hong Kong since 2007, but recently expanded to the US in 2019. If you’re shopping for a Plant lover or gardener This holiday season, these are the products I’ve had the best success using in my home and gardening setup, and that I’ll be purchasing for myself.
The 12-pod LPH-SE Senior was shown at Indoor gardening guideit’s been a reliable companion at the table for several months now, producing organic chard that can be chopped up every few days for fresh salads. (Food doesn’t get more local than vegetables grown inches from your dinner plate!)
The LetPot app is a bit funky, but there’s no need for it once you set the timer for the 24-watt LED, which raises, lowers and flips up for easy access to the harvest. A pop-up gauge tells you at a glance the water level, the pump turns on every 30 minutes on its own, and instructions on when and how to add nutrients are right on the bottle (two bottles contain dehydrated nutrients).
I also tested two Aerial parks Combined with LetPot, although the app, design, and interfaces of the Aerogardens are a bit slicker than the LetPot, the end result is the same. LetPot’s LPH-SE is not only less expensive than its counterpart Aerogardian BonusIt has space for three other factories.
Second on my list of LetPot hits is the brand’s grow light for houseplants. (Although it would also be perfect for seedling trays.) It also works with the LetPot app, but like the LPH-SE, the app isn’t strictly necessary once you’ve set the timer, and if you don’t want to deal with the app at all, there’s a wired remote that also lets you turn the light on and off and adjust the light intensity.
The powerful 100-watt bulb can hang from the ceiling or rest on its telescoping stand, rotating nearly 360 degrees to shine where you need it. (Keep in mind that 100 watts is pretty hot – you wouldn’t want it too close to any leaves.) I appreciate that the light itself is large (2 x 3 feet), so it keeps the plants from getting too leggy. One downside to note: While the description says the rack can extend up to 72 inches, it actually only reaches about 60 inches, so if you have tall plants, you’ll need to keep that in mind — or use the hanging feature.
LetPot’s SS Pro seed product is quite new, but promising. It’s still on pre-order at the moment, but I’ve been using it for the past couple of months to grow onions, carrots and parsnips. A 24-watt (12″ x 7″) full-coverage light sits atop a vented plastic dome located above the seed tray. The tray is placed in a shallow container, underneath which is a 24-watt heating pad. Fill the container with water, and pour whatever medium you want into the tray (you’ll need to buy this separately; I used… Expandable Soil for Seeds, $12), and plant your seeds.
The LetPot app’s automatic mode will recommend a temperature range and lighting duration based on what you’re growing and turn the system on/off accordingly, or you can choose your settings manually. A temperature and electrical (conductivity) sensor, which measures dissolved solids – basically, The amount of nutrients in the soil that are available to plants) goes into the soil, and the digital display on the front tells you everything you need to know at a glance: the current temperature, the electrical conductivity level, and how many days have passed since the seeds were planted. The LetPot has a 99 percent germination rate, and although my germination rate wasn’t quite as high, I appreciated that the final seedlings were noticeably healthier and less leggy than those grown using just a small grow light. The power adapter makes a high-pitched beep when the lights are on, the temperature and EVA sensor give some buggy readings at times, and the auto mode clears when it’s disconnected, but if these minor weaknesses don’t bother you, the SS-Pro is unique in this area and worth a look.
