Organic bedding brand Coyuchi recently launched its own organic mattress, combining cotton, wool and Dunlop latex atop individually wrapped coils. While Koyuchi Linen sheets Excellent, I was a little nervous trying the company’s first effort into mattresses. A bed is not a mattress, after all, and experience does not always transfer through endeavors. In this case, though, I did. The Coyuchi Natural Organic REM Mattress is wonderfully firm without being too firm and is perfect for those of us who lack sleep technique and tend to sleep in every direction – side, back and stomach. I was never comfortable.

The design begins with coils laminated onto a wool pillow, then, like a Midwestern dip, layers in smaller coils, latex, then wool, topped with an organic cotton cover. There’s surprisingly good edge support considering the distance between the coils and the top, and the mattress offers good motion isolation as well. Coyuchi says Natural REM can be used with or without a box spring. I tested it for a few months on a box spring and then spent a week with it on the floor and didn’t notice a difference. The cotton and wool layers are GOTS certified organic, while Dunlop latex is GOLS certified. The material is not dyed, which is great for anyone who struggles with artificial dyes. As with most of these organic options, Coyochi is made without chemicals, foams, or adhesives.
