Named after a hardy American breed of sheep known for its resilience and soft wool, the Targhee collection was first launched in 2005, aiming to be versatile, strong and comfortable from the start.
I’ve walked in many pairs over the years, and they remain a reliable option that I’m happy to recommend, but they’ve never been the most aesthetically pleasing. But with the new Targhee Apex, they’ve gone all out with a Gorpcore skin that actually works. I know looks aren’t important when you’re hurtling over rocks and through puddles, but in the world of outdoor fashion these days, beauty and practicality should go hand in hand.
Still, there’s enough fashion chit chat, because no matter the style, these are great boots that are waterproof and weigh just 0.75 pounds each. They feel light without being brittle, the footbed is roomy, allowing my feet to spread out comfortably over a long day, and there’s plenty of traction through the midsole. Grip is reassured on mixed terrain too, the outsole digs in confidently on ups and downs, and toes are well protected.
The best feature, however, is the all-new ReGENX midsole, which gives you a spring in your step, but without the mushy feel you sometimes get with trail running styles. There’s also enough sidewall support to keep from feeling like sneakers, although the low cut does limit ankle protection. However, there is Targhee Apex boot version (1 lb, 10.4 oz per pair).
