Amazon or not?
The big question a lot of people have is simply whether to choose an Amazon e-reader (and Amazon’s e-book ecosystem). Amazon dominates the e-reading market but there are alternatives, including Kobo, Barnes & Noble and other “open” e-readers that allow you to import both DRM-free and copy-protected file formats. Amazon lets you now Send DRM-free ePub files to Kindle e-readers.
budget

Screen size
Some people have no problem using smaller e-readers with 6-inch screens; Others prefer it a little larger. The Kindle Paperwhite has a 6.8-inch screen, but you can also step up to a massive 10.3-inch model if you want a more tablet-like experience. However, larger e-readers weigh more.
Waterproofing
If you plan to use your e-reader in the bathtub, around the pool, or at the beach (or any body of water), you may want to consider getting a model that is rated as fully waterproof.
Lighting scheme
Some of the more advanced lighting systems feature more LEDs and the ability to adjust brightness and color temperature.
Screen resolution and pixel density
Even entry-level e-readers now come with so-called “HD” E Ink displays, so you don’t have to worry too much about getting a clear enough screen with legible text. The main spec to look for is pixel density. 300 pixels per inch is ideally what you want, although some larger monitors don’t offer that. New color e-ink readers currently offer 300 dpi for black and white and 150 dpi for color.
Physical page turn buttons
Most e-readers now have touch screens, so you can turn pages by simply touching or swiping the screen. Some e-readers have physical buttons you can press to turn pages. Some people like having physical page-turning buttons.
