Some bike lock makers offer their own internal security ratings for guidance. This can be helpful, but the most secure locks we’ve tested use standard ratings from objective sources, including… Sold safewhich offers ratings for multiple types of vehicles between Bronze and Diamond, and artWhich uses a number scale from 1 to 5.
So what do these ratings actually mean? Here is a guide to two of the best locksmith companies and their rating systems:
Sold safe It was established in 1992 by Northumbria and Essex Police in the United Kingdom. The brand is now owned and operated by the Master Locksmiths Association, a non-profit trade group. It uses a four-level classification system, as described below.
Safe classification levels sold: Bronze (lowest, basic tool safe); Silver (mid-range, safe against enhanced items/specific attacks); Gold (2nd best, resistant to custom tools/attacks); Diamond (Highest, resistant to devastating attacks and Special Tools).
The company also uses separate classifications for different types of vehicles, such as bicycles versus motorcycles (which it now calls pedal cycles and powered cycles, respectively). For example, Hiplok DX has a Sold Secure service Diamond cycle pedal Classification and safe selling Gold-backed course classification. That’s a good score, but it’s not as secure as grinder-resistant options like the Litelok X1 or tougher locks like the Litelock X3 and Hiplock D1000, all of which earn a diamond rating in both categories. Mill resistant locks usually say so directly on the brand’s website as well. When in doubt, you can always go to Sold secure site To check if your lock is rated or not.
art is an independent Dutch security company that uses a five-star security system that focuses on vehicle type, durability, weather, environmental and attack resistance.
ART classification levels: 1/5 (Minimum security rating, suitable for second bike lock only); 2/5 (A higher security rating represents good protection for bikes from theft, and is the minimum for most insurance companies); 3/5 (Bicycle security for high theft risk, also suitable for bicycles and scooters for insurance purposes); 4/5 (Very high security rating for bicycles, good protection for motorcycles from theft during travel); 5/5 (Highest security rating, sometimes required to secure motorcycles stored at home).
